Cannot find the file ...

George Sinkinson

I'm getting the standard message "Cannot find the file
<filepath> (or one of its components)..." for a signifigant
number of file types, eg., .js, .wsf .

My machine has suddenly slowed down.

I get the same thing when I try Run regedit32

I must have put my foot in it somewhere, but no idea where.

Can anyone give me a hint on where to start looking?
Or how to trap what's apparently missing?

* Don't really know what this means.

* You can use Task Manager and or Performance Monitor to see what process is
consuming the mem/cpu

| I get the same thing when I try Run regedit32
* Try regedt32.exe

+ Many thanks for the response. It gets a little cold,
dark, and lonely out there now and again...

+ At first I thought I had blown %SystemRoot% or %Path%,
but they seemed to be OK. When I started examining the file
types(.JS for example), I noticed the "Opens with" entry
was blanked out. I went into "Advanced", and used "Set
Default".
It restored the 'Microsoft Windows Based Script Host' as
the application for opening. Now, .js works.
+ Do you know of any reference showing the mapping between
File Type and Actions for a new, base install of Win2K Pro?

+ No single process apparent as culprit. Have run
Diskeeper, Ad-aware, and RegClean. Just seems like an
overall slowdown.

+ I've gotta get more sleep - I knew that - just got used
to typing regedit.

I don't know of a complete registry reference online. You may find one at
your local book store.
