Cannot do a system restore

I have multiple restoration dates. My system has been shutting down with no
reason that I can identify. I do suspect that I installed a faulty driver,
but so far I have been unable to remove it. I have tried doing a system
restore to many restoration points, but at each date even less than a week
ago, I get the message that my system cannot be restored to that date. Does
anyone have an explanation for this or better yet tell me how to do a system
restore.

See MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore pages:

Does your computer shut down completely and you have to turn it back
on again? Or does it do a complete shut down and restart?

If it is restarting then open Control Panel - System and go to the
Advanced tab.
Click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom)
section.
In the Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for
"automatically restart" to clear it; then click on Apply and OK as
needed to exit.

That should put an end to the restarts but they may be replaced by a
"Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message. If that happens then the
content of the STOP message, including the STOP code, all 4
parameters, and any file or module names mentioned, will be a direct
clue to the underlying cause. Post that information back here if you
need help with it.

Good luck

Thank you for you help, but it does not answer my main question as to why I
cannot do a system restore on my computer. Again thank you for trying to
help. Judy

Did you review the information on MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore
pages as I suggested? Is your specific error message not documented
in his error messages section with an explanation?

Please provide the *verbatim* text of the error message that is
producted by System Restore when it fails. It is important to report
these messages accurately as there are many instances where it is the
presence or the absence of a single word in the text of the error
message that distinguishes one specific problem from another.

Good luck

Dear Mr. Martell, Thank you for your additional advice. I checked out all
your recommended sites, but they were of no help. Here is a better
explanation of my situation. I installed some software which most likely
addded a driver to my hard drive which I can not find in order to remove it.
Now my comuter will shut down and restart for no apparent reason. I therefore
thought doing a system restore to a date preceeding the questionable software
installation would remedy the situation. Unfortunately the restoration
process starts normally till I get the message that my system cannot be
restored to that date. Do you have any suggestions that might apply to my
situation? Again thank you for the help you have posted. Judy

Hi Judy,

There's a good chance a restore point has become corrupt and is causing
the restore to fail. At this point the existing restore points will need
to be deleted to fix the corruption. To do this, disable System Restore
then enable it. Unfortunately this will not allow you to restore the
system.
