Cannot connect to Microsoft Websites on networked Desktops

Hi,

I have a small network consisting a Windows 2000 Server that has a DSL
connection with a DSL modem and acts as a gateway for three other PC's. One
has XP Pro, the other two have W2k Pro. All machines are networked using a
3Com hub.

I have no problem with file/printer sharing on any of the machines. On the
W2k Server I can access Microsoft websites and Windows update no problem, but
on the PC's if I use my LAN, they find the website but eventually timeout
connecting to the pages. All other URLs work fine. I have checked the network
settings on all machines several times but cannot see anything wrong.

If I connect a modem to any of the PCs and dial out over PSTN then there is
no problem.

Any ideas anyone?

Regards

This is a common problem with DSL connections that use PPP Over
Ethernet (PPPoE).

Find the right MTU setting on the client computers, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computers, or use
DrTCP to make it:

See these sites for more information about this type of problem:

Many thanks Steve for your help. Change the MTU size down to 1418 and all
clients are working fine now. What I still do not understand is why this
happened in the first place, until a couple of weeks ago I never had a
problem. Tho if I do find out i will post it.

Again Many thanks for your help.
