"Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard" (yes, another one)

D

Dwight Stewart

I have a new Pavilion Notebook with an internal DVD/CD-RW drive. Last
week, the Windows CD Writing Wizard, the built-in CD burning software,
stopped working. Below is a description of the problem, with answers to some
of the most obvious questions others might ask.

Problem Description.

A CD-RW disk is inserted and the drive icon in My Computer changes. I then
copy a file to the staging area and select "Write these files to CD." The
Windows CD Writing Wizard appears asking me to name the CD. I choose the
default name and click "next." At that point, a new window instantly appears
saying "Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard." There is no clue to the
exact problem, just "an error in the writing process." At that point, the
only option is to quit.

The speed of the error message is a possible clue. It appears a fraction
of a second after clicking "next," with none of the normal windows and no
sound of the CD spinning up. In other words, it appears the Wizard doesn't
even try writing to the CD before the error message.

Are there any other symptoms?

Yes, the Event Viewer reports...

"The Application Management service terminated

with the following error: The specified module

could not be found."

Does Event Viewer say which module could not be found?

No.

Will the CD drive read files?

Yes, the drive will read music CD's, data CD's, and DVD disks.

Will burning work with programs?

Yes, the problem is limited to just the built-in Wizard.

Has the built-in burning software ever worked?

Yes, I was able to burn a number of CD's prior to the problem.

Can you erase CD's using the built-in software?

Yes.

Have you tried using another disk, or cleaning the drive?

I've tried several other disks. The drive is new and works fine otherwise
(see above).

Can you give more details about your computer?

Pavilion zd7000 (custom ordered), Pentium 4 3GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD with
about 60GB free, and XP Home with SP2. Based on other messages read relating
to this problem, it does not appear to be hardware or brand specific.

Is the computer software up-to-date?

Yes, all critical and optional updates have been installed.

Did you install anything else in the days leading up to the problem?

No. Nothing, other then critical updates, has been installed in more than
a week prior to the problem, and the built-in software worked fine for
several days after that last installation.

Have you scanned for spyware?

Yes, the computer is routinely checked for spyware using two different
programs.

What I've tried so far to fix the problem, with no success.

- Tried the IMAPI CD Burner service fix described in article #324129 on
Microsoft's web site.

- Uninstalled the recent HighMAT CD Wizard extension and then tried to
write to a CD. Reinstalled the extension afterwards.

- Looked over the registry settings with RegEdit to see if all files
mentioned relating to CD and CD burning are where they're supposed to be.

- Compared my computer to another to see if any obvious CD related system
files are missing.

- Checked the date of the drive firmware and found no new updates.

- Adjusted the writing speed listed in properties several times.

In fact, I've used Google to search past messages in these newsgroups for
anything relating to this problem and read at least a dozen web site
discussions with similar content. There are literally thousands of such
"Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard" messages. None of the possible
solutions offered worked in my case, or, based on what I saw, in a lot of
the other cases mentioned in those messages.

Several suggested the use of a third-party product to burn CD's. While
that certainly is an option to avoid the problem, it doesn't really fix the
problem. Since this is a new computer, which I hope to use for several
years, I would prefer to start out relatively free of problems. Further, I
appreciate the convenience of the internal writing wizard for simple tasks.

What I suspect is the likely problem.

I suspect a program or update has either moved or deleted a piece of the
software needed by the CD Writing Wizard. Sadly, without something to
reinstall the wizard (at least the parts which can be reinstalled), or a
list of the files used by the wizard, there is nothing I can do short of
reinstalling Windows (which is obviously not something to look forward to).
Neither Microsoft, nor HP, offer an installer on their web sites.

However, I may be entirely wrong about that suspicion. Therefore, if
anyone is aware of another solution, or something else I can try, please do
let me know. Your help will be sincerely appreciated.

I cant write to my cd-rw-dvd combo drive either. Dont know why - get instant
message telling me there is no disc, or something like that. There is a
disc, tried several different blank, it wont format either. Still behind the
scenes it shows files being downloaded - cant figure it out. Called IBM ,
they are sending a new drive, but this is the 2nd one, and I don't think it's
the drive - big hassel to install because keyboard has to be removed to do it

I got that last night for the first time, with a CD-R disc not a
CD-RW disc in my CD-RW drive.

The disc was one to which I had previously written a data session
using NTI CD-maker Gold. That software closed the session but not
the disc. The wizard did the same thing for me that it did for you:
died with that message almost immediately after I clicked Next.

I reopened the disc in NTI CD-Maker and wrote the second session
without difficulty.

It's not the drive -- I took a CD-R I had written with the native
Windows wizard a week or so ago, and was able to add files to it
with the native wizard without a problem. So I'm guessing that the
wizard has some problem in importing a previous session even though
Explorer can read the files without difficulty.

Part of the explanation, no doubt, is that the software was
actually written by Roxio. :)

Stan: I used a CD-RW Memorex disc - brand new - I dont understand what your
talking about with CDI-Gold Maker (is that a type of disc?). I tried old
CD-RW and new CD-RW - I just don't get it. If I put a music CD in the D
drive it plays - if I try to copy anything on the CD-RW-DVD drive "D" it wont
do it. I'm still totally lost in the woods. AND, I don't think a new
drive is the answer. I wonder if others have experienced this mental haze
and blank stare I'm wearing trying to figure this out.

No, I don't "need" to fix the problem. But ultimately, I don't "need" a
computer either (man lived on this planet for a good number of years
without). However, it would be nice to have both, and have both working
properly.

By the way, to everyone reading, sorry about the text formatting in my
first message. I typed it in Word and pasted it into my newsreader. Anyway,
a lot of extra blank lines ended up in the document during that process.

Since the Wizard seems to default to the "Cannot Complete the CD Writing
Wizard" error message whenever there is a problem, it's difficult to know if
your problem is related to mine. However, what makes my situation unique is
the missing module entry in the Event Viewer, clearly suggesting a missing
software component. If you do not see the same missing module entry, your
problem is likely unrelated to mine.

Again, it appears what I need is a way to reinstall the CD Writing Wizard,
or replace the loose components not built directly into the system, or some
info concerning exactly where the components should be so I can make sure
the registry properly points to them.

That seems to be the consensus of just about every thread I've read on
this subject. I've also noticed Roxio is keeping some distance between
themselves and the problems reported. Their web site doesn't even mention
the burning software within Windows.

No, "NTI CD-maker Gold" is separately purchased CD burning software. The
words "CD burning" are a reference to the process of writing files to a CD.

In most cases relating to this problem (the internal CD Writing Wizard not
working), one can usually still write files to a CD using software purchased
separately. Obviously, those program don't use the same internal software
components used by the Wizard.

This is important since it shows there is nothing wrong with the CD drive
itself, or most likely the hardware drivers for it. In other words, the
problem is more likely related solely to the internal software.

Relax. CD burning is complex, involving a number of new technical terms
and processes. You'll slowly catch on.

Further, this problem is even more complex and elusive. I've been using
computers for a good number of years and still cannot figure it out. Indeed,
based on what I've read, there may be no solution to myspecific problem
short of restalling Windows (as stated before, you problem may be slightly
different). However, in my case, reinstalling Windows may not even work if
whatever messed up the CD Writing Wizard the first time simply does it again
after everything is reinstalled.

Thanks for clarification - just a comment/observation. I must be really
niave - something so basic - from Microsoft - and it hasn't been solved - by
golly, there are megabytes of downloads - and they cant "see" this wizzard
problem? I particularly didn't want to load a lot of separate software -
unless it was really needed - guess I'm getting a good sense of reality.

While I certainly don't know for sure, I suspect business politics is at
play. The internal software behind the CD Writing Wizard was made by Roxio
and licensed by Microsoft to use in Windows. As such, Microsoft is likely
blaming Roxio for the problem and Roxio is likely blaming Microsoft. At the
same time, both companies are also likely pointing to other software
installed by users as the responsible culprit. In the meantime, while all
this is going on, users with the problem are still stuck with that problem
and it isn't getting fixed.
