Cannot access the Web

I am trying to help a friend who uses Juno(sic) as their ISP. They can send
and receive email just fine. The Juno software dials into their server with
no problems. Connection shown as 50k and ready to go. As soon as they try to
access the Web it always says the site is unavailable and to check the
network settings. We have done this and nothing is wrong that we can find.
We did a WinXP repair installation, no help. We also uninstalled and
reinstalled IE with no help. Juno uses MS IE as its browser. Juno's Tech
support had this as far as their help goes........

" On the "Read" tab click on the "Get New Mail" button. If you are
able to successfully connect to get new mail using your Web connection,
your Web connection is active and you're probably experiencing a problem
with Internet Explorer. "

WinXP HE and IE6 is the OS. We have beat the Juno forums to death and their
tech support with no help. I figure those in the know hang out here instead.

We are dead ended at this point - any clues, suggestions or help would be
greatly appreciated

This is what's so strange. When you go to check the email on Juno, it dials
up thru the modem, gets hooked up (50kbs) sends and receives any mail - no
problem. While still online we try to fire up the browser to surf and it
fails. Browser will not work. Always says to check network connections or
the website may be having difficulty. This is true for any and all attempts.

Hi Doug,

I ran into a similar problem last week on a clients laptop. She could connect through dial-up to AOL and download her e-mail no
problem. Any time she tried to access the web, the request would either time out or say it couldn't find the page. In her case
the problem was that the computer had a standalone proxy client installed. She could get her mail because AOL doesn't use a
standard TCP/IP connection for e-mail. I uninstalled the proxy client and now she can get on the web with no problem. I would
check top make sure that there is no proxy. If there is, then disable it and see what that gets you.
