Can system restore help in solving the problems created by renaming the user
account?

Bought a new PC with XP Home edition.
Tried to change the user account name by the User Account Program in Control
Panel, but the profile folder name remained the same in Document & Settings.
Again, tried to rename the profile folder by Window Explorer but in vain.
Therefore, gave up and changed the desired name back to the original one in
Control Panel >User Account Program.

Opened the computer next day and found a new folder with the desired new
name in the Document & Settings. Under this new folder is a folder called
Programs which has an empty folder called Startup. Checked with the User
Account Program, there is only one user, i.e. the original user name. Again,
the problem is I cannot delete the new folder in Window Explorer because an
error message tells “Cannot delete. It is a system folder for window to run
properlyâ€.

I don’t know whether this strange new folder would cause problems in the
future or not, I really want to delete it. May or may not related… once my
PC generated over 100 information windows non-stoppingly after I clicked the
“How does Automatic Updates work?†in the System Properties. Besides, the
desktop icons sometimes sudden winks and refreshes.

Q1. Can I use System Restore to “delete†the strange profile folder? i.e. go
back to the date in which the strange profile folder not yet created.

Q2. Is the System Restore has some serious consequences I have to consider
before I work on it?

Q3. I have installed Photoshops & VideoStudio to my computer as well as two
window updates -- “Windows Genuine Advantage Notification†and “Windows XP
Hotfixâ€. What will happen to these installed programs after the System
Restore? In particular, the window update files because during the
installation of Genuine Notification file, I was told that it could not be
uninstalled and I might have problems in future’s updating without this file.

Q4. A friend told me that in XP Home edition, a new folder will be created
under Document & Settings whenever there is a change (rename or create) in
user account. Different from the XP Pro, these folders cannot be deleted in
Home Edition. Is it true?

Can anyone help & share your experience here? Thanks.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have just read the article you suggested.
Since I am a new user of winXP, I am sure I can't handle the possible side
effects mentioned in the article. I prefer deleting the strange new empty
folder to renaming the original profile folder. Any suggestion ? Can system
restore or some other easier and safe ways help? I am using a winXP home
edition and as heard it has many constraints than the XP Pro.
