Can Not delete Files of any kind

All of a sudden I can not delete a file, word document, a folder or even a
desktop icon. The message I get when deleting is 'the directory or file can
not be created'. I also tried opening the Recyle bin and the searchlight
goes on until I close the window. It appears I do not have the recyle bin.
Any help?

How large is your hard drive and how much space is left on it? You can
get a "pie chart" showing this by right-clicking on the drive icon in My
Computer and choosing "Properties".
