Can IE do continuous smooth scrolling?

Is there an option somewhere that enables continuous smooth scrolling of a
web page? I've been looking for a mouse that enables that, but haven't
found one. Then I saw somewhere that there is some add-in for Firefox that
makes the page smoothly scroll upward, so that you can read the whole
article without hitting the bottom of the screen.

Is there such a capability in IE? I have XP SR2 and IE6.

My mouse has a depressible (is that a word) scroll wheel. Click the wheel, a
double ended arrow appears, move the arrow down or up a bit, and the window
starts a slow, even, scroll. Or faster, if you like. It's a standard mouse,
i believe.

Control Panel > Internet Options > "Advanced Tab" > check >
"use smooth scrolling".

Thanks Happy, I know what you are saying. I too have such a mouse and that
same feature, but the scrolling is jerky, not smooth. It doesn't really
allow you to read the text while it is scrolling, at least not comfortably.
I am looking for a solution, hardware or software, that lets the page scroll
up slowly and smoothly and continuously for easy reading -- there MUST be
such a solution. If not this would be a great idea for a clever developer.

Thanks Silj, I have "Smooth scrolling" enabled, but the scrolling is still
jerky, not smooth enough to read comfortably as it is scrolling.

Assuming XP SP2, Renny?
Hit your "Windows 'key' + "Pause Break" simultaneously.
Click on the "Advanced Tab" > "Performance" - 'settings' - button.
Under 'Visual Effects' - what settings are applied?
"Smooth Scroll for List Boxes" should be checked.

Yes, "Smooth-scroll list boxes" is checked (as are all the other options).
But the scrolling that I do get is not smooth but jittery, like it scrolls 6
pixels every 6 vertical retraces instead of one pixel each retrace (this is
not meant as an analysis of how the feature is implemented but only as a
description of what it appears like).

Would you change-out your mouse for another, Renny, to oblige my curiosity?
That may be the issue and I can see, thus far.

We'll get to the bottom of this, just a matter of elimination.

I appreciate your willingness to pursue this issue, Silj. I originally had
a Microsoft Intellimouse with clickable scroll wheel. It enabled continuous
scrolling but was a little too jerky for easy reading. I finally decided to
"upgrade" to a Microsoft Optical Mouse 3000, only to discover that it
doesn't have a clickable scroll wheel, though the detent-free, smooth wheel
itself does a fairly good job of scrolling smoothly.

Based on someone's recommendation, I then bought a mouse from Dell; it
turned out to be a Logitech MediaPlay cordless mouse. It had numerous
features, including a "Cruise" button, but again it did not cruise smoothly
enough to permit easy reading. So I returned that mouse to Dell and have
gone back to the MS Optical Mouse.

By googling "mouse smooth scroll", I found that there is an add-on to
Firefox that gives very smooth scrolling. In desperation, I installed
Firefox and that add-on, and find that I get the best approximation to what
I was looking for (it doesn't have a continuous scroll capability, but it
does scroll quite smoothly when you turn the scroll wheel slowly). So I now
have two browsers: IE as a default (and to support Roboform), and Firefox
for reading news and other articles.

If you have any additional suggestions, I'll be glad to try them.

Renny,
Other that what I have previously suggested to enable smooth scrolling
via the Advanced Options settings, I can offer you this which pretty much
offers the same;
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/smoothscrolling.mspx>

You *may* want to dry removing your mouse from Device Manager by typing
"devmgmt.msc" (no quotes) from your Run > Dialog box > highlight the device
at the [+] item > right-click > select > "uninstall" > Note! You will left without a
mouse at this point > manually reboot your machine.
Doing this will rebuild your mouse driver database and "perhaps" improve your
situation.

Good luck!

Thanks again. My conclusion: Continuous smooth scrolling doesn't exist in
Internet Explorer. It is not a defect in my system (hardware or software),
it is simply a shortcoming in IE.

My workaround: Firefox browser with
