Smooth auto-scrolling

I recently bought a new Microsoft Optical Mouse 300. My previous old
"Intellimouse" had a feature that I could press on the scroll button and
then move the mouse slightly down, and the text would scroll continuously
downward. The further down I moved the mouse, the faster it would scroll.
The only problem was that if I set it to scroll quite slowly (so that I
could read the text as it scrolled), it would scroll somewhat jerkily. I was
hoping the new mouse would scroll more smoothly, but it turns out the new
one doesn't even have this entire feature anymore (the scroll button cannot
be depressed).

Does anyone know of a mouse that implements this continuous smooth scrolling
capability?

Dell has a mouse that works pretty well. It's a laser and it has this
feature. The only downside to this is that Dell products have to be ordered
online.

Thank you for the info. I searched the Dell website but found no way to buy
just a mouse. I don't want it badly enough to be willing to buy an entire
computer just to get the mouse. Are there no other mice that give smooth
auto-scroll?

Thanks Bob for the prod. I did pursue the Dell site more deeply and found
replacement mice, but they are all the same model, sounds like a plain old
two-button scroll mouse. They say nothing about continuous smooth
scrolling. Of course I had to specify first what type of Dell computer I
was trying to replace the mouse for, but I tried quite a spectrum of them
and they all used the same mouse.

Aarondg58 (or anyone else) can you specify a model number for the mouse that
enables continuous smooth scrolling? Or the Dell computer that it comes
with?

Have you tried a brick-and-mortar store? Circuit City, CompUSA, and
Staples sell all kinds of mice. I had a Logitech mouse several years ago
with this auto-scroll feature. Or try a Google search...

Incredibly, the mouse I ordered yesterday arrived today. To my surprise,
what Dell sent me was a Logitech MediaPlay cordless mouse. And to my great
disappointment, it does NOT have a smooth continuous scroll capability. So
I am returning it.

Is there no mouse on the market that somehow lets me read an article while
it slowly and smoothly scrolls upwards (without jerkiness)? Is there a
newsgroup that would deal with this subject better than this one?

Thanks to every one for their help.

Does it not provide a mousewheel button? You apparently did not order
the part number I provided.

It does have a scroll button, but there is no continuous scroll
functionality. What they call "Cruise" responds to scroll wheel rotation,
but it doesn't keeps cruising by itself. Not really any better than plain
old scroll wheeling.

I did ask for Dell P/N 0D1161, and then explained exactly what functionality
I was looking for. The lady told me she understood and would send me the
right thing. (From the Dell website I had Chat'ed with a sales person and
he told me I had to order it via phone.)

Bob, I read all the description in the link you gave. It mentions that the
scroll wheel moves smoothly instead of having the detents that mice used to
have. But that is not the "Smoothness" I am looking for. I would like the
page that I am reading to slowly and smoothly move upward, so that I can
keep reading without hitting the bottom of the page. Does your mouse give
you a way of doing that?

As I mentioned before all the buttons are programmable (33 options) so one
of the options are "auto scroll" as in the original mouse when the page
slowly moves up or down although I have to admit as I have just tried it .it
does have a small jerkiness..Is that what you mean?

Yes, exactly. My old MS Intellimouse had this feature too but I found it
too jerky for continuous reading.

In internet explorer, press and release the mousewheel while over an
area containing text. A circle containing a dot and two triangles should
appear(one triangle pointing up, the other down). Move the mouse down a
little, and the screen should start scrolling slowly up(farther will be
faster) move mouse up past the circle and the scrolling will reverse.
Press and release the wheelbutton again to toggle off. You don't "roll"
the wheel.
