Can I update processor?

Old Mariner

I'd appreciate guidance if poss.either with a reply or perhaps sending me to
the newsgroup that can answer it.
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Vista home basic with:
Model IX INTEL[R] CELERON[R] CPU [email protected]
Socket/Slot socket 775[Zif Socket]
Frequency 1600Mhz
FSB speed 200Mhz.
I really don't have much idea about the inside workings of a computer but I
gather I may be able to replace the Zif Processor with a faster one to
improve speed.
I have plenty of memory so I just wonder if it is worth the trouble,if it
can be done.
I am just a light user.
Thanks if you can.

Well there could be all kinds of issues waiting to jump on you so if
nobody here has done it you could Google for something like this.

overclocking dell inspiron 530

For example some versions of the motherboard might not like it, maybe a
faster video card would help, or even more memory 'cause you didn't say
how much is in there. It's really a question of value for money you can
often get a decent spec machine from people like geeks.com for half what
it would cost you in time and money to build one. Not trying to put you
off at all just making the point that doubling CPU clock speed does not
necessarily that big of improvement overall.

He didn't say he want to overclock it, he asked about replacing the
processor with a faster one.
My suggestion would be that he contact Dell tech support if he really
wants to do this, however, with all the potential hassles and
problems, I think he'd be better off (read cheaper) simply buying a
faster computer.

From experience I can tell you Dell motherboards don't take too kindly to
processor upgrades. You might get more information if you posted this in
the dell newsgroup.
