Can i make the internet start faster?

On my new Vista notebook machine, the net takes a REAL long time to start.
It seems i have to wait about 3-4 minutes. During that time, if i start IE,
i get a message in the IE window that the net is not started. So, i wait a
bit and try again. Finally, after waiting long enough, the net does start.

I notice down in that lower right corner of the screen, all sorts of stuff
starting, but it seems the network is the last one. Is there any way to
tell the system to start the internet sooner in its sequence, so i don't
have to get a cup of coffee after i start the machine and before i can do
anything.

Thanks,
tom

Get rid of all of the junk that is starting.
90% of is probably not needed.
Us e MSCONFIG or in Windows Defender>Tools>Software Explorer
to disable startup items.

You are probably using a wireless network.
That is the last thing to start. That's just how it works.

You can also try Hibernation instead of shutdown.
You'll be up in running a lot faster.

Hi Tom,

First off, you don't want it (your network adapter) loading until after any
network security is initialized, particularly things like a firewall and
antivirus/antispyware applications. If your program(s) takes a while to
load, then your choices are pretty limited to either waiting or removing the
software.

Second, you really do not way to determine the order in which startup
programs load, much less how drivers are initialized (this is the actual
cause of the delay, you cannot connect until the network card's driver is
initialized, and then it needs to negotiate the signal from the internet
source). The only real way to reorder programs is to disable them all, then
write a batch file with them executing in the order you want, but this will
not help you with the driver issue.

Things that may help:

a) Updating the network card driver.

b) Changing AV/firewall solutions. Many of the prepackaged ones, like
Norton/Symantec, tend to overburden the system.

I have achieved a very significant acceleration by setting a fix IP-adress
in the LAN. Goes as follows:
Network-center - LAN connection - properties - mark TCP/IP and choose
properties - disable "IP adress automatic" and enable "Use IP adress" -
enter 192.168.168.1 for IP adress, 255.255.255.0 for subnet, 192.168.168.8
for gateway.
(Please apologize my bad translation from german into english.)

Better now?

Its glad to see a correct response in here...
Yours is the correct response, unless he has a USB modem (and that might be
the case.. since he has such a delay)

While MVPs = useless drivel

is your modem with ethernet (network card) or a USB modem?

USB modems create a virtual network adaptor and have to then reconnect each
time you start your pc.

A normal router-modem has the connection always on and maintained in the
router.. inside the router you will find that there are parameters that make
it go offline and re-engage the connection, so check those.

As posted by others, the best is to turn off the DHCP server on the router
and use static IP addresses.

Reduce the services, like for example..
you would want to turn off (disable) Universal Plug and Play service and
SSPD service,
both of these services are of very little use in your situation and makes
windows load slower...
