IE7 slow load times

in just another one of many annoyances since i've upgraded to vista
ultimate, IE7 is taking enormous amounts of time to load up.
i've checked the task manager and neither the ram is exhausted or the
CPU's stressed, but when i say a long time, i'm talking sometimes 40
seconds to open the window and sometimes up to another 40 seconds to
open the page.

i'm aware that some of the load time for the pages is not vista or IE,
but i've another machine here that is about half the specs of this
one, uses XP home and the pages load up much faster, so i'm convinced
the problem is somewhere inside vista ultimate...

where might i start checking to see what the problem is?

i don't mind some wait, but at this point, it has become ridiculous to
wait this long for a webpage.
i might add that they don't always take this long, usually the initial
opening, but then on occasion pages within the normal course of
browsing will take this long. it can't be OK...

What sort of security software do you have installed - antivirus,
antispyware, firewall, etc? Do any other programs take a long time to
load? What other programs, if any, are you running at the same time as
IE?

1. Panda Titanium AV and Firewall...
the windows defender is on, windows firewall is not, since panda is
operating in it's place.

2. No other programs are as noticeably slowed as IE right now...

in a test to watch the byte count as Mark Ferguson suggested, i had
windows mail and skype open too....

sometimes IE will open up right away, but more often than not, it is
really slow.
in the latest test, the first attempt opened right away, the second
took over 2 minutes. and it was only my home page....
if it happened one in 20 attempts, i'd just accept it as an occasional
annoyance, but it happens 50-60% of the time, which is really
annoying.

as for the byte count, it seemed kind of obvious: nothing happening
for the entire time before the window opened and then slow activity
while i waited and a flurry right before the page loaded.

the problems honestly have started since i did the clean install of
vista ultimate. i had general slowness before with home premium, but
the entire system seems to have gotten glitchy with ultimate.
it seemed slightly worse after the tech at MS reset my permissions
during a fix.

When you say "open up right away" are you refering to your homepage or
to IE itself loading on the desktop?

both really. I am using a cable modem, and when i click on the IE
icon, it should open up and load the home page within a few seconds.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FWIW, IE itself, on my Compaq laptop loads in about 3 seconds...

If IE opens up on your desktop without delay, meaning that the program
itself appears before you, then IE is technically loading just fine. If
it's just your homepage that isn't loading up in a timely fashion, then
it may only be the connection. I'm trying to isolate whether it's IE
that's the problem or your connection.

Try setting your homepage to Google, exit IE, and then open it up
again. Does Google come up without delay?

i set IE to open to a blank page, here are the time results....
1st attempt: 3 sec.
2nd attempt: 40 sec
3rd attempt: 40 sec
4th attempt: 35 sec
5th attempt: 2 sec
6th attempt: 42 sec
7th attempt: 42 sec
8th attempt: 2 sec
9th attempt: 3 sec
10th attempt: 3 sec

there is no content to load at all just a call to open up IE. 50% of
the time it is a 40 second wait, the rest is what i would consider the
normal wait of a few seconds

now i'll set the home page to google:
first number is time to open browser window/ 2nd is time to load page
content
1st attempt: 40 sec. / 2 sec.
2nd attempt: 50 sec. / 2 sec.
3rd attempt: 2 sec. / 2 sec.
4th attempt: 40 sec. / 2 sec.
5th attempt: 42 sec. / 2 sec.
6th attempt: 2 sec. / 2 sec.
7th attempt: 40 sec. / 2 sec.
8th attempt: 42 sec. / 2 sec.
9th attempt: 2 sec. / 2 sec.
10th attempt: 40 sec. / 2 sec.

70%stalled IE load time, google opens without problem

now i'll set the home page to my usual myYahoo! page containing more
content than the Google:
first number is time to open browser window/ 2nd is time to load page
content
1st attempt: 42 sec. / 10 sec.
2nd attempt: 42 sec. / 8 sec.
3rd attempt: 2 sec. / 7 sec.
4th attempt: 42 sec. / 8 sec.
5th attempt: 42 sec. / 8 sec.
6th attempt: 42 sec. / 8 sec.
7th attempt: 42 sec. / 7 sec.
8th attempt: 42 sec. / 6 sec.
9th attempt: 42 sec. / 9 sec.
10th attempt: 2 sec. / 8 sec.

80% stalled IE load time

Now, I'm going to just do some typical browsing to test for content
load time.
first will be the time it took to load page, second is the page
2 sec. / google groups microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
7 sec. / skype forums
5 sec. / Newegg home page
5 sec. / wikipedia main page
13 sec. / ESPN Soccernet
10 sec. / BigSoccer newsgroup page
50 sec. / GQ US startpage [this opened within 5 but stalled loading
for about 40 sec]
3 sec. / Engrish.com
3 sec. / Youtube startpage
25 sec. / Sartorialist blog
2 sec. / google groups microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
2 sec. / thread within same group
4 sec. / my personal website
40 sec. / Fox Soccer
5 sec. / google maps

actually, other than 2 pages stalling, i have not been able to
duplicate the slowness loading pages that has been part of my regular
experience lately, but it has also been happening that even during
browsing pages get hung up for around 40 seconds.

for today, the extent of the problem seems to be IE.
i was a little surprised that the stall seems to be 40 seconds nearly
every time. i have only noticed that it took a while, but i have not
previously timed the startups.
but the regularity of the stall is suspicious.

any ideas now?

Have you tried to run IE without Panda on? That is, shutting down the
processes associated with Panda and even disabling the Panda services
temporarily. I don't know what those services/processes are however -
look at the services list...

The fact that it's so random and IE sometimes loads in a few seconds,
would suggest something other than IE is causing the slowdown. And from
my experience, 95% of the time performance issues are AV/firewall
related.

Try disabling Panda services temporarily and reboot. Don't worry about
not having AV protection for this short period. You may want to turn
Vista's firewall on temporarily if your computer is not behind a router.
Then conduct the same sort of runs you did above.

Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools\Services

alright, i disabled Panda and sure enough IE loaded up right away 10
out of 10 attempts.
I guess the next bout of tech support is with Panda.

thanks
