Can I install MS Home Essentials 97 on an XP machine ?

I have an old Win 95/98 PC which I do not use.
It came with Microsoft Home essentials 97. I have the CD.

Home Essentials 97 includes:
-Word 97
-Works 4.0
-IE
-Microsoft Arcade

My 10 year old son has a PC that does not have any applications like Word etc.
His PC is an XP.

If I install this on my son's PC will I ruin it ?
Will Word work on his PC ?
Is there any way to only install Word ?

Any help would be highly appreciated.
PS i am not technical.

Thanks
Anna

I have no idea if Home Essentials will work on XP. If the installer will
let you install just a few pieces, that would be OK (Word 97 will run),
but the version of Internet Explorer is going to be ancient and XP will
*not* let you install that. I have a better idea for you. Download the
OpenOffice suite from www.openoffice.org. and install that on your
son's machine. It is free, and has a word processor, spreadsheet,
presentation program (like PowerPoint), and drawing program. It can
open files created in MS Office format (if the formatting wasn't too
complex they may even look the same) and it can save in MS Office
format for exchange with others.

If you still want to try the older program, set a System Restore point
first.
