Can I install MS Home Essentials 97 on an XP machine ?

I have an old Win 95/98 PC which I do not use.
It came with Microsoft Home essentials 97. I have the CD.

Home Essentials 97 includes:
-Word 97
-Works 4.0
-IE
-Microsoft Arcade

My 10 year old son has a PC that does not have any applications like Word etc.
His PC is an XP.

If I install this on my son's PC will I ruin it ?
Will Word work on his PC ?
Is there any way to only install Word ?

Any help would be highly appreciated.
PS i am not technical.

Thanks
Anna

I don't believe that old program would be compatible
with Windows XP. Consider purchasing a new program.

Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (also includes Microsoft Word)

($99.95 - $20.00 rebate = $79.95) (good value)

Anna;
It should install and work.
If it is incompatible, it will not install.

During the install process, you are asked which components to install.
At that point you can choose to only install MS Word.

Thanks for you suggestion.

I installed the CD. The window says: Do you want to install
Ecyclopedia Encarta ? If I chose no. The install ends.

If I do choose Yes, then I will end up installing ALL the software on
the CD including an old version of IE ?

It does not give me a choice as to what I can install.

Can you Please help me ?

Thanks
Anna

In My Computer, right click on the icon for the CD drive and select Explore.
This displays the contents of the CD in an Explorer window. Do you see a
folder called Word?
