Can I delete hp2.tmp file?

I have a huge file hp2.tmp under my /windows/temp/
directory which is not only huge >10 MB but also very
fragmented. Can I delete it? It has yesterday's date on
it (11/11/03).

Why didn't you quit while you were ahead. It better not be 10,000 MB.
All .tmp and/or temp files can be deleted. If it is only 10 MB save it
to a folder and after a few days without any problems you can
permanently delete it. :)

Actually, the size is 10,000 MB not 10 MB.

Some Compaq computers (and probably others) use their own hibernating
program instead of Windows Power Options. If this is an HP computer and you
used hibernate yesterday, this may be a file from the saved system state.
The file contents are irrelevant once the system has been powered up again.

This file is large enough that it might be from that but can only guess at
what created it. Since it's in the Windows\Temp folder, it's very likely
safe to delete but there's no way that I can say "absolutely safe."

Leave it there for a day or two more to see if it's modify date changes. If
nothing is using it, move it to Recycle Bin or another folder. Wait a few
more days to see if anything complains. If that turns out uneventful, then
finally delete it.

Your computer can run easily with a few files too many. It's possible for
it not to run at all if one wrong file is missing. Always better to err on
the side of caution.
