Can I convert my web based email back to POP3 email

Moxie

Hi.

I have Office Professional 2003 that of course uses
Outlook.

Prior to this I used Outlook Express 6.0.

I recently got Norton Antivirus 2003.

It only scans email that is pop3 and smtp, unless I first
download the attachments to my harddrive.

I use Outlook and/or MSN Hotmail and regular Hotmail. So
that means I either check my email in Outlook or MSN
Explorer or IE Explorer.

How can I convert my web based email back to POP3 email?

This is what Norton says I must do in order for it to
scan my email through Outlook.

I know Hotmail uses McAfee Virusscan, and I assume MSN
Hotmail does as well /shrug. Does that also include
checking email through Outlook or Outlook Express? Does
it only scan my emails using IE Explorer or MSN Explorer
or both or all three (Outlook too)?

Or do I have to hassle with converting my email like
Norton suggests?

Much appreciated, and very confused about what is and is
not being scanned.

Thank you for your help.

Moxie

There is no need for this integrated way of scanning your mail messages. The
on access scanner of your virusscanner will sufice. Note that the Reading
Pane from Outlook doesn't allow code execution so automatic launching of
virusses is impossible.

What do you mean exactly by the "on access scanner of my
virusscanner"?

As I said, my virusscanner is Norton Pro 2003. It DOES
NOT scan my emails as I said...hence why I made this post.

So your saying "the on access is sufice" is incorrect
unless I am misunderstanding you.

Also, where you say "the Reading Pane from Outlook
doesn't allow code execution so automatic launching of
virusses is impossible." That sounds incorrect also! I
mean, if OUTLOOK reading pain prevents launching of any
viruses...then no one would ever need a virusscanner for
emails...all they would have to do is use Outlook, which
is absurd to me anyhow.

So regardless of anything above THIS LINE HERE can you at
least answer my questions below?

1. True or False - McAfee Virusscanner is used
automatically with Hotmail from IE Explorer browser. (I
think TRUE)

2. True or False - MSN Hotmail from MSN Explorer browser
also uses McAfee Virusscanner? (I'm not sure)

3. True or False - Microsoft Outlook Pro 2003 and/or
Outlook Express 6.0 receives previously scanned email
from Hotmail and/or MSN Hotmail servers? Meaning, the
email I read from my Hotmail and MSN Hotmail accounts
through Outlook are basically scanned for virsuses?

4. True or False - Microsoft Outlook Pro 2003 and/or
Outlook Express 6.0 has no virus protection whatsoever as
a stand alon product?

Anyhow as I mentioned in my original post you replied to,
Norton said the html web based email MUST BE converted in
order for it to scan my Hotmail and MSN Hotmail email for
viruses.

And of course MSN/Microsoft don't tell you HOW to do
this. I tried looking for support/contact info to ask
them how. I click the CONTACT MSN HOTMAIL link and all
it is for is for reporting junk mail/spam/abuse. What if
I want to ask a regular question? lol They don't want to
be bothered with such things.

That's the real-time scanner that watches the files on your disk. For
McAfee, for example, it's called VirusShield. It's usually represented by
an icon in your System Tray.

No, it's not incorrect.

At one time, Outlook and Outlook Express did execute HTML code contained in
messages. Microsoft has patched those versions of Outlook from OL 2000 on
and current OE versions so that they do not launch embedded code.
1. True or False - McAfee Virusscanner is used
automatically with Hotmail from IE Explorer browser. (I
think TRUE)

False. Reading Hotmail via a web browser does not scan for viruses (and it
doesn't need to, since you're not downloading anything to your computer).
2. True or False - MSN Hotmail from MSN Explorer browser
also uses McAfee Virusscanner? (I'm not sure)

False, for the above reason. MSN Explorer is just Internet Explorer with
new clothes on.
3. True or False - Microsoft Outlook Pro 2003 and/or
Outlook Express 6.0 receives previously scanned email
from Hotmail and/or MSN Hotmail servers?

False. Nothing from Microsoft has ever scanned for viruses and, unless MSN
offers automatic scanning as a feature, you won't get it there, either.
Certainly the free version of Hotmail doesn't have that feature available.
4. True or False - Microsoft Outlook Pro 2003 and/or
Outlook Express 6.0 has no virus protection whatsoever as
a stand alon product?

They have security features that prevent the execution of malware attached
to mail messages.

Unless the mail is deposited on your local machine, Hotmail messages won't
be scanned.
