Can connect to router but not to internet?

I recently tested Vista on my PC. My parents really liked it and asked me to
upgrade their PC to vista as well. I did so and everything went ok, except
for one thing: the wireless connection.

My PC connects directly to the router via ethernet, but my parent's PC
connects VIA wireless USB adapter. Everything is set correctly, but for some
reason it connects only to the router but not the internet. In the network
center, it shows a valid errorless connection from their PC to the router,
but an error from the router to the internet. Yesterday, I was able to
somehow connect for 10 minutes, and had the internet working, but then it
disconnected again. I have been tinkering with the settings for over 3 days
and don't know what to do anymore.

Does anybody have any clue how this issue can be resolved?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I had the same problem when trying to connect wirelessly to my network
through my router. After searching around I found that you need to go -
Tools, internet options, in the drop down box that comes up, click on"
Internet" in the window box and UNCHECK the box in the lower left corner that
says ENABLE PROTECTED MODE. Click apply and close out of the open boxes.
Doulble click Internet Explorer icon to load up and you should be okay, You
will have to click on the HOME button every time you load up I.E. as it
prompts you to do this if you want to connect to the internet. Worked for me
after trying everything else. Don't know if this is a glitch in the OS or a
security feature. Hope they disable this check box by default in later builds
or Microsoft will be swamped with calls with people trying to connect to the
internet. LOL.

Hi again,
An addition to my earlier post. In the internet drop down box, also uncheck
the Enable protected mode checkbox under Intranet and trusted sites. I also
added my home page to the trusted sites list just for good measure.

Because they saw me test it on mine and asked me to install it on theirs
because they liked it a lot :)

Hi,
I can see what you are dealing with here. Did you try what I suggested? My
screens looked exactly like yours before I connected and unchecking those
boxes I told you about in an earlier post did the trick. Nothing to lose by
trying.

Its in Beta which ,means under no circumstances install it on a working PC
that you rely on ( or your parents) didn't you read the warnings?? In other
words its not fit for general release & MS are asking users to do the
testing for them !!

so have we come to an explanation on this one?? mine is doing the same
thing. when i was at work logged onto their network it worked fine but now
I'm at home and i can't seem to get it to work again.

so, have we come to a conclusion for this one? i am having the same problem.
when i was at work it was coming in fine but now that im at home on my own
network i cant seem to get it to connect again. it finds the router but not
the internet.

I have a similar problem except mine says its connected to the internet but
when i diagnose the connection it says Domain name server not reachable and
plug in adapter in local area 5?
I dont understand as i'm not using lac 5.
I unchecked the boxes as stated earlier but no joy.
I can connected to skype, or play Counter strike online and use xfire i just
cannot use the internet for browsing?
I'm using a wireless connection that works perfectly in xp. (on a different
hard drive)
Any help would be most welcome

I've got exactly the same problem as John:

Seems to connect to my wireless network, but then says "Local connection".
If I go to properties, then IPv4 is Local, and IPv6 is Not connected. The end
result is that I can't do anything with my connection at all - no Net, can't
see other PCs on the network, nothing.

I'm using a D-Link DWL-G520+ with XP drivers, as D-Link don't have any Vista
ones yet.

I have basicly the same problem. I am using the 64-bit version of the Vista
public beta and can see the machines on my LAN but cannot hit the internet. I
can even browse to the web page on my D-Link router but cannot get to the
other side. The internet works fine for the other machine of the network and

Seems like alot of people are having this problem but no one seems to have an
answer. Does microsoft even read any of these posts? Please email me if
anyone solves this.

Microsoft is aware of trouble in the following areas:

1) On a wired network, being able to talk to the local network, but having
no access to the network. You may be able to ping an internet host, but you
will not be able to connect to it.

Please go to the manufacturer of your router's website (from another
computer obviously ;) and download the latest firmware update, and follow
their directions on installing it ... this may fix the problem.

This problem is related to your router not properly handling internet
traffic.

2) Wireless network connectivity

Updating your driver may fix any connectivity problems you may have.

If you can connect to the internet thru a wired connection, try checking
Windows Update for an updated driver. Also, try your computer manufacturer's
website and the wireless network card manufacturer's website.


Also, if you are able to connect to the internet somehow, you should report
the problem with the problem reporting tool, which you can access from the
Feedback link on the desktop.

Thanks, but this is so frustrating! So many people, with so many different
wifi routers -- many of them approved LIVE devices, as st6ated on MSFT's own
sites -- and they are the problem, they don't handle internet traffic
correctly?

I have all the same symptoms, with a NetGear WGT624. I've tried all thses
helps too, with no success. Is there anyone who can help us get online, or
even tell us which router on the market will definately work with Vista?

Sorry, but with a week of trying to fix this, I guess I'm exasperated :)
