browser stops working after about 5 minuts of surfing

Hi,

My Xp machine which is also on the same network as a win20 pro machine stops
working after about 5 minutes of surfing.
I did some debugging and found the following:
1) I can still ping everything and the names translate ok os ip and DNS are
OK I think.
2) Some service called "computer browser" shows up in the event log as
stopped about the same time the browser stops working.
3) I have tried using firefox as well as IE but act the same.
4) Proxy detection in the lan settings in IE was set to automatic.

Any ideas?

What error message you're getting when browsing with IE? Has anything changed
in your tcp/ip properties (dns entries, dhcp etc.)? Have you tried repairing
your connection (right click local area connection then click repair) or
releasing/renewing your IP? What happens to the other Win2k machine when you
browse using IE on the same network?

GLuck!

you can stop the computer browser service to test ...it may be a forced
"master browser" election process is shutting you down

How do I turn off this master browser settings that speak of. Both the XP

control panel >administrative tools > services find computer browser and
stop service (turn off auto so it won't reenable)
then you should be able to tell if that is affecting anything...
