my nieghbor's browser was hi-jacked and it left her pc in the state of
critical system error. saying a virus was present and it's leading to system
failure. it suggests virusburst. for malware. but you need a credit card to
buy it and run it. we tried mcaffee but it disabled the ability to connect to
internet. what should we do? stacey

Well it's not much about customization but send it to a professional or just
do what they'll probably do if it is in that sad a state and (this is likely
one of those situation) reformat. It is a pretty extreme solution but it is
a pretty extreme error. This one CAN be a bugger to remove but there's a set
guide for it so you CAN try putting these on disk and taking them to her
house and fixing the computer that way - be warned that it may be
complicated and may not be successful.

Hi Stacey,
Your nieghbor browser been Hijacked by Malware which infected her/his
machine by him/her allowing this malicious website to download thier activeX
and Source Code on that machine.
Download these Utilities from here for your Nieghbor on a CD and let Her/Him
run it on the infected machine:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com for Lavasoft SE for Personal use
http://www.safer-networking.org for Spybot S&D
Then download this HijackThis file from here:
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm
and send the report to the forum and there they will help you, but do not
send it here!.
HTH.
Please let us know your progress.
Regards,
nass

Besides the other answers you've received, stay away from VirusBurst. Note
that it's listed on The Spyware Warrior List of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Products & Web Sites at
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

nass had good advice and galen's advice is good as a last resort if you
can't get anyhing to help her.

Do NOT go to virusburst! That's probably part of the virus' work. Your
credit card may be violated there.

If you can provide the NAME of the virus from any of the error messages, I
believe I can tell you how to get to Symantec's site or another which
mirrors the same information, where you will find a step by step removal and
repair instruction.

If your browser will work at all, you could try putting 72.246.30.138
in the address bar instead of Symantec.com, and it might just let you get
there. Often the virus just watches for the name, not the IPA, so often
that will work.
Then search for your virus name there.

If you prefer McAfee, they're at 216.49.88.12

tucows.com might also have info on the virus.

If that's no good, come back with what you've tried and we'll make another
go at it. Please also post the virus name here if you know it, just in case
it's a new one.
