Browser freezes when attempting to spawn new window

Browser freezes when attempting to spawn new window.
Right click on a link, select "Open in New Window" A new
window opens but the address line is empty. To load, I have
to hit the stop button. The link then appears. I can click
in the address window and hit enter. Then it will load.

This newsgroup I am posting to, when accessed via IE
Explorer, the "New Post" "Post Reply" etc. do not work (I
got here with netscape.) Only opens blank window. No
address bar so I can't use the previously described trick.
(Web Newsgroup link below)

I cannot use Windows Update (freezes when I click the
install -- probably trying new window).

I've tried:
Uninstall/reinstall of IE
Uninstall, followed by deleting directory, followed by
reinstall of IE
Reinstall of Windows Scripting.
Virus check with current version of AntiVir personal edition
Scan with AdAware and Spybot

Search of knowlege base yields no clues.

Help!!!

IE version 6.0.2800.1106 SP1
Windows version 98 Second Edition

Thanks,
Jonas Gryder

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC.
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically
D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System
File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells
you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Thanks! restoring oleaut32.dll from the original disk did
the trick. Thanks also for the link to the
http://www.mvps.org/ site. I'm sure this will save me much
future aggravation.
