Recommendable?

I've had the HL-2140 for over a year. No problems. Easy to set up, easy
to use. The HL-2240 is this year's model.

BTW, the HL-2240 is on sale this week for $49.99 at Office Depot.

At that price, who cares if they last or not, since the toner costs more to
replace, than a whole printer costs.
You use it for a year, and if it breaks you are still ahead.

Isn't it true that after refilling the ink about 3 times, the drum
needs to be replaced and that can cost about $140?

While that could be true in some cases, I think you can get usually a lot
more than 3 toner refills to a drum.
.....Unless you use cheap defective toner refills

And remember that all the low end printers are not meant to hammer out 3000
printouts per day

But when you can replace the whole printer for a third of the cost of the
drum alone,....I doesn't take a lot of time to know which way to go.

Drum, rated at ~12,000 pages, costs about $80 US. High yield Brother
toner cartridge, rated ~2,600 pages, is less than $50 US. Indeed,
HL-2240 printer is less expensive than its replacement drum.

The HL-2240 has a regular "street price" of about $80-$120.
Standard yield toner (TN420) runs about $30-$45.
Drum unit (DR420) runs about $75-$110.

So, an "on sale" unit may be less than a toner and/or drum replacement,
but they aren't always on sale.

They are almost always on sale.
Granted the "starter" toner that comes with them, will only give you about
1000 copies, but it can be refilled to the same level as the high yield one
(same cartridge, less toner powder in it)

But if you want to be 100% safe,...BUY TWO,...and then you have the spare
parts when you need them.

Even for a bit over $100. for a laser printer, that's still a deal.
