Broken Installer

My installer stopped working. I have XP, everything updated, and I updated
the Installer 3.1 redist (or something) twice and it still isn't working.

When I try to update something, it downloads fine, then, after preparing to
install, I get "installation package could not be opened" etc.

HELP!!!!!!!!

This might help, worked for me:
go Start->Run enter->services.msc
then right click Windows Installer, select Properties
change Setup Type to Automatic.

I believe that 1/3 of Xp problems are due to Services for
which there is no Default reset button and the "Default"
help is out of date. Someone should complain.
