Broadcast Wireless Signal from PC ?

S

steve

have a friend who has a mac laptop. He has the ability to sit in a
meeting plug into the companies wired network, then configure his
laptop so that it can broadcast a signal so that others in the meeting
who are wireless can connect up to the internet and they can chat. In
other words he can use his Mac (imac??) to broadcast a signal so other
can pick it up.

Can this type of thing be done on a PC/XP. I have looked but am
confused by the information.

My questions are two fold.

1. Is there a web site that you can point me to that would tell me how
to do this on PC.

2. If you can do it in Microsoft land, can I do this on a desktop
computer as well as a laptop.

Thanks.

Sure - that's simple. You can take any computer, plug it into the companies
wired network, and have the computer share network connectivity thru a WiFi card
on the computer, or thru an external WiFi Access Point.

ICS is an optional component in Windows XP that lets the computer operate as a
NAT router. Run the Network Setup Wizard, and select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

Then, identify a wireless connection on the computer that will be used to share
the network service (Internet), with the other computers.

Note that, depending upon whether you use a WiFi NIC, or an Access Point, the
WiFi network may or may not be secure. I would think that your company SHOULD
have some opinion about your doing this. Don't do this without some thinking of
how you may be exposing yourself.
