Brightness and Contrast

Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to adjust the brightness and contrast
of my monitor, which is far too dark. The actual monitor settings are at 100%
for each, and I went into display properties>settings, but there were only 5
tabs, and none of them had to do with brightness, contrast, or gamma. They
are General, Adapter, Monitor, Troubleshoot, and Color Management. I've tried
playing around with them, and they definitely aren't what I'm looking for.

Anyone know how I can fix it? Thanks!

Yes, the monitor controls are at 100% for brightness and contrast, and it is
not a laptop.

How do I find out what video card I am using? I'm afraid I'm not sure of the
ages, either. My computer broke and I'm using my brother's that he left
behind.

Sorry, I should have mentioned I tried that. Exact same brightness/contrast
with both monitors I've tried.

Hello,

Is the brightness problem existing when starting up (*before* the welcome
screen shows up)?

For example, during the Windows XP Loading Screen (and screens before that),
is the brightness problem there?

If yes, it is either a problem with the cable or video card itself.

If no, there is some software setting in XP that is set to reduce the
brightness.

You can check your Video card by going to Start > Control Panel > Display >
Settings (tab)

Your video card is listed under "Display:".

Wow, I've never actually paid attention to my computer starting up before...
The brightness (or rather lack there of) problem definitely DOES NOT exist
before start up. In fact, for the first few seconds that the desktop is
displayed (my computer has only one account and goes directly to the desktop)
the computer is actually at normal brightness, and then it suddenly darkens.

I'm not sure if you still need it, but my video card is: Dell E771p on
NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440
