Booting annoyence with Quicktime.

Every time I reboot, turn on machine with XP Pro, just
before the icons appear (quick launch I think they are
termed) lower right next to clock, screen appears wanting
to install Quicktime. Quicktime IS installed. I end it
by hitting escape. And setup goes to completion. Where
are the boot up instructions for this located? I have
uninstalled Quicktime and removed every reference of
Quicktime that I could locate, even from registry. The
Quicktime install screen still appears and if I select to
install, it does so. And where is the install screen
finding the program to install.

Running msconfig does not show any reference to Quicktime.

This developed when XP Pro was put on machine with a fresh
install.

I want to remove this annoyance. Any counsel would be
appreciated.

Quicktime is nothing to do with Microsoft so the installer had to come from
someplace else, possibly bundled into some 3rd party software you installed.
Camera software, a game perhaps, anything that uses Apple .MOV format
videos. The Startup folder in your Start menu is one place they could have
tucked the install link. Run a Search on your computer for Quicktime,
including hidden and system folders, to find the installation executable.
You can search for the file name or for the string Quicktime anywhere within
a file.

(quick launch I think they are termed)
Display The Quick Launch Toolbar

I have uninstalled Quicktime and removed every reference of Quicktime
that I could locate, even from registry.
uninstall quicktime

RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker is a perfect companion for your Windows registry!
RegSeeker includes a powerful registry cleaner and can display various
informations like your startup entries, several histories (even
index.dat files), installed applications and much more! With RegSeeker
you can search for any item inside your registry, export/delete the
results, open them in the registry. RegSeeker also includes a tweaks
panel to optimize your OS! RegSeeker is FREE for personal use only!
95/98/NT4/ME/2000/XP/2003
My personal use, is to, delete only the Green entries.
Click on Select All and choose > Select all Green items.
Right click on a Green item to delete all Green files.
1: Click on > Clean the registry.
2: Click on OK.
3: When searching is finished, click on > Select All & choose > Select
all Green items.
4: Right click on any Green item & click on > Delete selected items.
RegSeeker is also very good for registry searching, click on > Find in
registry, tick all the boxes in > Keys, put a word ( example quicktime
& apple ) in > Search for: & click > Search. Now you have a list on
one page, of all the registry entries for Quicktime & Apple.

Actually, there is no attempted installation. Rather, this is QuickTime
Tray Icon gives you the option of starting QuickTime directly from the
System Tray--a dubious feature and waste of resources.

< Quicktime IS installed. I end it
by hitting escape. And setup goes to completion. Where
are the boot up instructions for this located? I have
uninstalled Quicktime and removed every reference of
Quicktime that I could locate, even from registry. The

I'm confused. First you say, QuickTime is installed, but later you say
you have uninstalled it.
Running msconfig does not show any reference to Quicktime.

Msconfig should show a reference to the QuickTime Tray Icon, which is
QTTask.exe.
This developed when XP Pro was put on machine with a fresh
install.

It's possible to keep QuickTime *and* disable this annoying feature.
See:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_q.htm
and scroll down to QTTask.exe and follow the instructions (it depends on
which version of QuickTime you have).

Assuming you have Version 7:

Right-click the turquoise blue "Q" QuickTime icon in the System Tray,
and choose "QuickTime Preferences". Choose the UPDATE tab and
uncheck "Check for Updates Automatically". Next, choose the ADVANCED
tab and uncheck "Install QuickTime icon in System Tray". Click OK.
Finally, Disable or Delete this entry on the Startups tab of The
Ultimate Troubleshooter.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

That last sentence you can disregard unless you feel like shelling out
some money for that particular program. An alternative is to use Windows
Explorer to rename QTTask.exe to QTTask.old. But unchecking "Install
QuickTime icon in System Tray" should really be all you need to do.
