Can't keep QuickTime out of taskbar

R

Ron Hirsch

I'm running XP Home SP2, with all the latest updates et al.

The QuickTime icon keeps showing up in the taskbar each time I boot. I've
used msconfig to uncheck the QT item there, and it stays unchecked there.
And, it is the same EXE file that is listed. But when I go into Startup Cop
Pro (from ZD) it shows there as enabled. So, I disabled it there, but on the
next bootup, it's back to enabled.

The properties of the item show that it is qttask.exe. I don't need it
enabled, and I don't know why/how it keeps enabling itself. If I close down
the icon, I can still play QuickTime movies, and when I do so, the icon does
not reappear in the taskbar. But when I boot up, back it comes.

I assume that if I deleted the file totally, that it could no longer run,
but that might cause a hiccup somewhere, where the instructions to run are
given.

Can anyone clue me in on this -

Rename the QTTASK.EXE file and it will no longer load.

Control Panel > QuickTime > Browser Plug-in > QuickTime System Tray
Icon > untick.
I've used msconfig to uncheck the QT item there,

No good idea since that entry may return the other day.

Thaks for the path and info.

I would have expected that telling msconfig or Startup Cop to not load it
would work, but they didn't.

I ghad previously searched around, but missed the path you gave me, but I've
now told QT to not load that icon. I really don't know what it does anyway.

Every time you run QuickTime, it will reestablish itself as an
item that starts automatically.

Control Panel, Quick Time Icon. Open the applet and clear the bottom check
box to show icon on taskbar.

Hi Ken,

I did not have to run QT to have it reestablish itself. Even when I kicked
it out of items to "START with WINDOWS BOOTUP", it reestablished itself
without my ever going near it.

I have gone into Control Panel, and taken care of the matter now. I wish MS
would come up a way to play QT stuff in the Media Player. QT can be a fat
pain.

QT is a "proprietary format", which means (as I understand
it) that MS can't include codecs to play QT files unless it
pays a royalty to Apple (the owner of the format). I don't
see that happening anytime soon.

A similar problem exists with Real Media (.ra etc) files.

QuickTime in its most recent release is somewhat less
aggressive and invasive than it used to be, for which reason
I've allowed it on my system. However it is still a
truculent program and you need to careful with it.

Real Media on the other hand remains beyond the pale.

Ron, I have found a very useful program called ITweakU Limited Edition at
Cnet's Download.com. Not only does it give you access to a variety of
settings on the Start Menu, Desltop, Drive Icons, but it also lists all the
items in your startup. Here you have the option to disable or completely
remove from startup any annoying program like QuickTime. Go to Download.com
or their homepage at: http://www.pjfdata.se/pjfdata/ and download.

Third party is not needed at all.

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup and Selective Startup (Line 148)

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit
