Boot Folder

B

Bill Byrnes

I have just removed Vista on a dual boot installation. Windows XP is working
fine but there is a foler left in the C:\ root directory,

"Boot". It has file named memtest.exe and two subfolders "Fonts" and "en-US"
in it. It is not causing a problem but I cannot delete it. I get an error
that sas "Cannot delete, make sure disk is not full or file is in use". I
cannot find the file in use in the task manager.

Can anyone tell me how to delete this folder.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Bill :)

Take ownership of the directory (and files), then they should be able to be
deleted.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bill :)

Here is a bit more information on this that you might try if taking
ownership does not work:

If you get the error you don’t have the right’s to delete the folder boot
and cannot set the ownership to your account, check the following.

Open this computer, at the menu open the “Tools” folder and deselect the
option “Use simple file sharing” .

Now you have a extra option available for files and folders the TAB
“Security” .

From within that tab you are able to set the full control to your account,
using the advanced options and add your account to the auditing owners.

From now on it’s no longer owned by Vista but again with your account and be
able to change settings and delete the folder.

Hope this helps.

PMFJI,

But I am in a similar situation but I cannot delete the folder. I get
told bootmgr.exe.mui is in use. I also have a file in my XP root
folder, 'bootmgr' that is also undeletable it also being in use. I
have searched the registry and nothing turned up there.

I have used Unlocker, which is great for deleting undeletable files,
but that failed...so did recovery console, safe mode, deltree and a
freeware driver for reading and writing to NTFS partitions. I've tried
everything.

Everything else from Vista has been removed, I just want to delete the
above. Any ideas?

TIA.

Cheers,

Guy
