Boot errors need help

I have a windows XP SP2 professional emachines T2825 AMD Athlon XP 2800+
2.09GHx, 512MB ram. It has all the latest updates using Microsoft update.
It uses the standard microsoft disk driver date 7/1/2001 v5.1.2535.0

The system has trouble booting. You can hear the disk retrying. Every once
in a while it will fail and give me an Event ID: 7 Source: Disk Version 5.2
Symbolic name: Io_err_BAD_BLOCK message: The device, 1%, has a bad block.

This is the third disk I have put in and they all have the same problem.
One was a Western Digital 120GB, and two have been Seagate 120GB. I just put
in the second seagate because I thought the other disk was going bad. When I
run chkdsk it never finds any bad blocks. I ran seagate diagnostics and
never find any bad blocks. So I'm convinced it can't be the disks anymore
and must be something else. Either the controller or the driver. Both say
they have the latest firmware and driver. What could it possibly be? Once
booted no problems, except coming out of sleep mode or booting from power up.
In both cases I hear the same disk thrashing and in most cases ends up
booting. Any help will be appreciated.

Have you tried changing the IDE cable?

Ensure that it is plugged in securely . and not too tight. Try with the
CD-ROM cable to see if problems exist.
