Bookmarks - Automatic???

Mickey

Hi,
I'm working on a document and NOT adding bookmarks but bookmarks keep
showing up. They are somehow automatically getting added. Any ideas why or
how I can delete all of them at once?

Thanks,
Mickey

How do you know that bookmarks are "showing up"? Are they listed in the
Bookmarks dialog? Unless the Bookmarks option is turned on in Tools > Options >
View, they're invisible in the text. When the option is turned on, they appear
as gray thick square brackets at the ends of the marked text, or as a thick
I-beam between characters if the bookmark is collapsed to a point. If that isn't
what you see, then it's something else
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm).

If they really are bookmarks, they may be created by inserting or updating a
table of contents, cross-references, or ASK fields or form fields. If that's
what's responsible, you can't delete the bookmarks without disabling the
features.

Other than that, I've never heard of spontaneous bookmark generation.

I have notice in the Bookmark dialog box bookmark with names like "OLE####",
when you track these they tend to at locations of portions of text that has
recently been pasted in (even Paste Unformatted Text).
I have not been able to find a reason for this as the source did not have
any Bookmark or link of any kind associated or find a setting that may
associate pasting as bookmark/hyperlink, etc. that can explain this.
I tend to do a check for these anomalous Bookmarks before send any document
out and have noticed they appear in approximately 1 in 10 documents.
Strange.

What you are describing is usually due to an add-in from Excel. Chances are
you are starting Excel while Word is running. Some add-ins use the Clipboard
for their custom toolbar images and I suspect that's where the Bookmarks are
coming from, to identify the Clipboard content so it can be replaced once
the add-in is finished using the Clipboard. IIRC, it's an Adobe add-in. I
might be in the XLStart folder rather in the Tools/Add-ins list.

I suspected this (or a something similar) might be the case with "Mickey"
and have been watching this thread to make this suggestion if he verified
what he was seeing were indeed bookmarks. :)

Many thanks Beth for the suggestion.
These bookmarks could be due to me starting Excel whilst Word is running, as
I often have to open Excel for info and then move on. Next time I see these
little critters I shall make a note if I had indeed opened Excel.
As to an Add-In, my XLStart is empty and my Tools/AddIns list is all
unchecked.
Thanks again Beth.

ps.What does "IIRC" stand for.

It could be another application, and the add-in may not be an Adobe add-in,
but it's usually an add-in found in another application and not Word. :)

Also note there are two XLStart folders that are used, one in Program Files
and the other in your profile.

Regarding your PS: IIRC=If I recall correctly. Here's a link to other
