Blue screen c0000135 because msvcrt.dll was not found

I have a sony laptop that now has a blue screen:

Stop: c0000135 {unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because msvcrt.dll was not found,
Re-installing the application may fix this.

I believe this happend when a software program was uninstalled a few days ago.

I know that if I can get the msvcrt.dll file into c:\windows\system38 but I
only have a CD ROM drive.

I don't have the Windows XP CD (at another location) and was wondering if it
was possible to create (using another computer) a bootable cd that will get
me to a prompt and enable me to copy from the cd the msvcrt.dll file into the
system38 directory.

Or perhaps someone has another suggestion?

Thank you, but I am way beyond that now.

I found a retail copy of XP-Pro, booted with that and copied the msvcrt.dll
file to windows\system32. Then rebooted and got a Stop:000021 Fatal Error.

I tried to run a Repair install but that option was not given, only a full
install over the existing installation, which would lose all documents &
settings files.

I can't access the hard drive as it is a Sony and that is somewhere deep
inside the laptop, under the keyboard. So I can't do a backup as an external
drive.

Is there any way to perform a parallel install of XP like one can do with
server products ? If I install a clean copy of XP to c:\win, then copy from
various folders from c:\windows ?

I don't quite understand why Microsoft does this.

This is an old computer and there is software (including the original XP
CD's) that just is not available.

There must be some way to "parallel" install XP and rescue the old install.

Thanks
