Big bold line that appears and prints out

Suddenly in my friend's document, a big bold line appeared covering
1/2 the page horizontally. I could not find it in borders or anything
that I could think of. If you right click on it, nothing comes up. You
cannot erase it.

any ideas. He has Word 2004 or so. not newest.
