Changing format changes entire document, not just highlighted text

ARGH! Suddenly, in Word 2003, when I try to bold a word, or center just one
line, ALL text is bolded or centered, not just the highlighted text. By using
"undo" and "redo" I can get it to look right, but it's making me crazy as all
documents take dozens of more clicks and much swearing. (Yes, I have used
"Show/Hide paragraph marks" and there are definitely hard returns everywhere.)

This happens only in newly created documents, not existing ones. I checked
my Normal template and it's dated 2004 so I certainly didn't change anything
about it.

This started a few days ago. I have scanned twice for viruses and nothing
was found. Use PC-Cillin which scans all incoming emails and attachments.
Running Windows 2000 Professional.

THANK YOU!!!! I don't know why this worked because the box "automatically
update style" was NOT checked, but it worked anyway. Also, the Microsoft
instructions don't say that in Word 2003, you have to right-click in order to
get the Modify style dialog box. But many, many thanks. New documents no
longer give me this problem.

The method described for Word 2002 in the referenced article should work for
Word 2003, though it is true that in Word 2003 you can (sometimes) access
Modify Style more easily via the shortcut menu (depending on the context).
