Best way to migrate data from XP to Vista Machine

Patrick

I have purchased a Vista machine lately and would like to move Outlook
Express / Favourites and some files from the old XP Home Machine to the
Vista one.

I would like to confirm I have to perform the following task
1) Run the "File and Transfer Wizard" on XP machine
2) Copy the data to an external hard disk (I don't have cross over / null
modem cable)
3) Run the "Windows Easy Transfer" on Vista and import those files

I would also like to ask
1) Can I migrate files in addition to Email / IE settings - Like some files
in a folder on the C drive - Like all files in a folder named c:\officestuff
?
2) I get Outlook 2003 installed on Vista. Can the transfer wizard import
all mails from Outlook Express to Outlook 2003 OR just can import to Windows
Mail only ?

Thanks

Outlook:-
Outlook needs to be installed, and configured, on the winxp pc before in
outlook express you can export mail to Outlook
Or
You need to transfer your Express msg store to Vista, then import that to
Mail, set up outlook, then in Mail export msgs to Outlook
Do not use any transfer wizard to move any outlook data/settings to Vista -
it invariably results in a corrupt outlook profile

I don't have Outlook installed on the XP machine. Does it mean that the
transfer wizard can migrate the mail data to Windows Mail ?

I don't have any preference to use Outlook or Windows Mail.

Besides, does it mean that the steps are OK for data transfer ?

Thanks

Windows Mail in Vista has the ability to import mail from an Outlook Express
store directory. On the XP machine, find your store folder. It is under
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. Copy the entire directory to the
Vista machine. From Windows Mail, File, Import, Messages, Microsoft Outlook
Express 6, Import Mail From an OE6 Store Directory.

The comments about not using a transfer wizard are spot on. In addition to
corrupting things they will copy a boatload of obsolete useless files,
making your Vista machine more bloated than it already is.

OK
Once Mail is setup with your Express msgs, then configure Outlook, and use
test accounts option.
If all OK, close outlook, then Export msgs from Mail to Outlook
