Transfering from XP hard drive to vista Hard drive

Gatorpit

The old XP machine fried the mother board but the hard drive survived. So I am trying to transfer files from the old hd to the new hd using the file transfer wizard. The old hd is connected using an external shell via USB. Upon the first attempt it copied everything on to it self. What I do wrong?

Hi,

The wizard is designed for use within one working OS for later transfer to
another. For what you are doing all you need do is copy the data from one
drive to the other from Windows Explorer. You may find that you need to take
ownership of the files in order to do this.
