Bare-bones DVD burning software?

I need a bare-bones program that will allow me to burn files to a (data) DVD
for backup purposes. Nothing fancy. I don't want DVD authoring. I don't want
to copy DVDs. I just want to back up files (big ones, many megabytes,
sometimes 1-2 gigabytes in size) to a DVD. Something akin to WinXP's native
CD burning software that works with DVD-Rs would be just fine.
Freeware/shareware not an issue. Reliability and compatibility are.

Does such a beast exist?

You need "packet writing" capability. The big two, Nero and Roxio Easy Media
Creator have these modules. Or, you could search Google for "packet writing"
and see what you find.

I use both of the big two and find no problems at all as far as reliability
and compatibility.

So, don't use it. But any decent program is going to give you complete
capabilities. What you are looking for is a crippled program.

Sometimes DVD drives come with their own DVD writer unless you bought
barebone drive as your SUBJECT says. XP hasn't got native DVD support
so you will need a commercial package to do the job. I use Roxio and it
does what it says on the can!
