DVD Burning Problem

Windows XP Media Center Edition
Dell Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
3.0 GB RAM

Trying to simply burn a data DVD using Roxio Creator LE - Dell Edition. The
burner will no longer successfully burn data DVD's (getting write error
after it apparently tries to write for 5-10 minutes). I have tried 3
different kinds of blank DVDs thinking this was the problem; +R, -R, TDK and
Sony.

This is a relatively new problem as I have successfully burned data DVD's in
the past with this software. The software does still burn CD's but seems to
do so very slowly (at least slower than it has in the past)

Is my burner fried (is there any quick way to tell?)or maybe I can try some
other software for burning data DVDs?

Thanks for any suggestions

If its the original drive that came with the PC and
you have used it a fair amount over the years I'd
say it time to get a new one.

You can however check Device Manager to
see if there is a driver problem. Also check the
cable from the motherboard to the DVD drive
to see if its still securely attached.

It may be that the laser lens needs to be cleaned which you can do with a
cd/dvd cleaning disk purchased from a retailer near you.

Just a wee add-on to JS' helpful suggestion. Completely remove the end
of the cable & re-attach same. Works wonders sometimes. Good luck.

Are you using any "virtual CD" software ? I've had interference before,
between a program which mounts ISO9660 files to resemble a CD to
the operating system, and a burner program. The burner program
gets confused, when it sees the virtual CD. Progress slowed to a
crawl. Problem was fixed immediately, after the virtual CD was
disabled.

Your DVD laser has failed. Unfortunately these are limited life items and
they fail (in my opinion) far too quickly. 2 years appears to be the
average life but I have known them fail in under 6 months. Fortunately a
replacement drive can be had for under $20.

I recommend Total Video2Dvd .It is is an easy-to-use disc authoring
