bad sound

I recently updated to windows XP from 98 se in which my sound worked fine until I converted. Music sounds like it is very low dense and I can barely hear singing that sounds like it comes from a hollow tube, I updated the drivers, same thing. I even uninstalled my pci sound card and used the original sound card on the mother board, same thing, The speakers are older but they always worked fine, do they have to be XP compatibale also?

The speakers should'nt matter, particularly as theyve functioned ok prior,
sounds more like a driver issue, unless there are some settings on yr sounds
software.
Using the pci card, with on board disabled, have you tried reinstalling
using the pci sound disk?
Use drivers from sound card site.
