To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type (or paste in): SFC /SCANNOW

Do an 'upgrade' setup of xp (pro) or reextract backup (home edition)

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into
a setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)

After the third run of sfc /scannow, bachup.exe finally works.
I don't know about this in your answer "from the original, or "Gold" version
of the setup CD, and you."
I run a Hp pavillion 2.4 with a pre-installed versioin of Windows XP home
edition installed on on a partition of the HD. Six month ago I installed a
new harddive and rinstall Windows on it. Now I have 2 HDs: 0 (new) and 1
(old). I did not reformat HD 1, yet, I still keep it as a backup drive D.
On the original drive many partial updates were installed, prior to SP2.
After installing the new HD, Microsoft download only SP2, and not the other
updates. Does it mean that SP2 included all the update?
You can answer directly (e-mail address removed) , if you which.
Thanks
