Background during boot up

I have been unable to get rid of the background display
that comes up when the laptop is turned on (and is booting
up) and when it is shutting down. I once used that
background as my normal background to my desktop, but when
I changed the desktop background this initial background
did not change. I don't seem to be able to do it through
the control panel/display/background function. Any ideas
out there?

Turn OFF Active Desktop, then set the background to None, then turn
Active Desktop back ON.
