AVG Free - constant nag screen?

Am I right that this nag screen urging me to upgrade to the paid
version is popping up about every few hours? Seems to have started
only since I installed version 7. Maybe I'm imagining it, but it also
seems to be getting steadily more frequent!

I never had any popup with 7.5. There is an inline flyer link to upgrade
to the paid version but no popup ad and I have it installed on both
Vista and XP.

NOTE: The duplicate alt.comp.anti-virus was removed in my reply.
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general was removed since it is an unrelated
newsgroup to this discussion, and to reduce the newsgroups count to
under 3, or less, to avoid abusive cross-posting.

He might be asking about the "notification" window that appears below
AVG's main screen. You can hide it but only after they nag you by
opening it when you load the main screen. Alas, Grisoft has gone done
Avira's road in prodding their users with nags thus degenerating them
into lureware. With Avira, you could use a software policy to bar their
avnotify.exe nag window from showing up and add a command-line switch to
get rid of their load-time banner. I don't know of a hack yet to get
rid of AVG's notification banner in its main screen. It has irritated
me enough that I'm trialing Avast in a virtual machine to see if I'll
switch.

Open AVG's main screen. Look down at the bottom lefthand side of that
screen. There is a button that will slide open a notification banner
window. It is that banner window that sometimes appears automatically
opened when you open AVG's main screen. I considered Avira to be rude
with their once-daily popup (avnotify.exe) during an update. AVG's
banner shows up *several* times per day so they are even more rude. I
don't like nagware even if it is free, especially when there are other
equal or better choices.

AVG FREE 8.0 has no such nag screen. Here's the manufacturer's link:

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

There's been plenty of discussion about the new AVG FREE 8.0 update,
which has, among many other improvements, integrated AVG anti-spyware
into the freeware version. It does cause ActiveX warning flag conflicts
with the freeware SpyBot S&D, SpywareBlaster, etc., "immunization"
protection, but apart from this, I've heard of no other complaints
about the new AVG FREE 8.0 (now 8.0.100).

I heard about the update and discussions on alt.comp.freeware.

Absolutely no nagging with AVG 8 on my machine. I have never had any
complaints about AVG since I started using it about five years ago. I
recommend it to all my clients.

I've NEVER had a nag from 7, 7.5, or now, 8.

Uninstall the Trial Version and download/install:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/

Better yet:
Avira AntiVir® Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/
You may wish to consider removing the 'AntiVir Nagscreen'

I used to, but no longer with 8.

You might be talking about the drop-down notification. If so you can
disable it using the following method.

To get rid of the "Dropdown Notification" all you have to do is change 2
files in the ...\Program Files\AVG8 folder.

- Change avgmwdef_us.mht to avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
- Change avgresf.dll to avgresf.dll.bak

It seems time to look for an alternative...
auto update did not give you total free AVG version

I'm using the free version 8.5.392.
I recently got rid of the nag panel at the bottom of the AVG window by
renaming avgresf.dll as avgresf.dll.bak
File is in Program Files\AVG\AVG8
Seem to remember that others files in that folder needed similar treatment,
or deletion, in the past.
