Autoupdater Problem Fix?

R

RNK

A quick message for those with repetitive download and
installs with auto updater. I've not had a problem with
this until today when I updated to 5733 via the file
update menu. Upon completion I hovered the cursor over
the "spyware definitions" star to check that it was
successful. Unfortunately it still showed 5731 and I
feared that I had encountered the 614 autoupdate bug that
I've read so much about. Instead of trying to update
again I closed MSAS and then opened it again. It had now
corrected itself to 5733. I would like to here if this
works for anyone plagued by the "614 auto update bug".

Cheers
Richard

P.S. Thanks Microsoft.

Hi Tom.
aaaah....so that's the problem. Now I get it!
a new workaround,
Empty you Temp Internet folder
Then click for update MSAS
Go to the Temp Internet folder
there are now 3 folders, look for the next 3 files in those folders
gcThreatAuditScanData[1].gcz
gcThreatAuditThreatData[1].gcz
gcDeterminationData[1].gcz
Ok change the .gcz annex to .zip
unzip them to the MSAS folder
Say yes to overwrite!
Then click upgrade MSAS
and no more useless upgrades!

Yes it is still a Beta!

Tom's solution about renaming files to zip and unzipping
in anti-spyware folder after 4 days of update frustration
worked for me. Thanks, Tom

Unfortunately, for some reason I could not rename files. Also, I didn't
remember where MSAS was installed and couldn't find it.

Hello Gary,

normaly in c:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\
And rename you can also do by clicking 2 times on it but with some time
between it!

Well changing those files to zip files and unzipping them
seems to work.

But what why is this happening in the first place? And
why is it necessary for these files to be manually
converted like this?

Thanks for the baby lesson, but you don't get what I meant.
In the Temp folder for IE you can't rename files. I don't even think the
rename menuitem is in the dropdown menu.
In the c:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ folder the files are type
gcd, not gcz. I couldn't open them using WinZip, however, even after
renaming.
I'm using Walker's workaround and it is okay. But the attempt to modify
contents of gcz/gcd files failed at this end.

Yes, it's beta all right!

That it's beta is neither here nore there. You couldn't open *.gcd
files with WinZip because they're not compressed files.

Hello Gary,

if you look to all those questions made here, you never know if you are
replying to a baby or 80 year old, the reason that you could not change
the name to the file is something else!
I put out a long time ago the abribute "s" for system and forgot it is
on by default and then you can copy or delete them!
So if you found them there you can copy them to a normal folder, (no
system) and then you can do what you want with them!
This for the next time you run to the same problem!
It is that Robin Walker came with his good solution you dot have to
badder anymore!

With kind regards >*< TOM >*<
