Automatic Updates download speed

I have a PC running XP Home SP1. Automatic Updates is turned on, and
I connect to the Internet via a cable modem.

Right now, AU is downloading something, I assume SP2 because all
other critical updates have been installed. However, when I highlight my
cursor over the AU icon, it says download percentage is 0%. It's been like
that for 16 minutes now. Is that normal?

I would not care at the moment. First, the SP2 is a huge package and
also the WU site may be slow now due to a huge number of download
requests.

The download percentage should change after an hour, don't you think?

Only if data is transmitted. Are you sure that AU does not simply sit
there and try to connect to the WU site?

All I know is that the AU icon says it is downloading, and that the
percentage is 0%. I connect to the Internet via a cable modem.

I had a small Microsoft icon appear, so I right clicked it, & it said it
was
SP2, so I clicked download. The download screen disappeared & the icon, so I
don`t know whats going on now?

I get the impression that Automatic Updates really isn't suited for
handling such a huge download to millions of people. Fortunately, SP2 is
supposed to be available via Windows Update next Wednesday, unless Microsoft
issues another delay. That route should be much smoother than going thru
Automatic Updates.

I had the autupdate message saying that SP2 was available for
download, I clicked to d/l it, it started and went to 0% then the AU
d/l icon disappeared as if it had shut down.

I've re-booted and AU hasn't reappeared and there's no hard disk
acitivity as if to suggest it has resumed a download.

Four hours and the SP2 download is still at 0%. I'll wait until
tomorrow morning, and if it hasn't reached at least 50%, I'm turning off
Automatic Updates (if it will let me), and wait until next Wednesday and get
SP2 thru Windows Update.

Same here! How does one know if they have SP2 or not? It's been several
hours and no visual indicator anywhere of anything. When I click
Help/About in IE, it shows I have SP2 version of IE, but I still get
popups, etc. Nothing has changed from what I can see.

Hi

From Start>Run type

winver

or

right click My Computer and select Properties. Either will tell you which
version of XP you have installed.

OK. Thank you. I'm still on SP1, I guess. I have no idea what happened
with the download of SP2 and why IE's Help/About says SP2, then.

As far as I can tell this Auto Update has been a fiasco. Microsoft
sometimes seems braindead. How long have they had to estimate these roll
out issues...4 years?

There are many reports of either AU shutting down or stalling ad infinitum.
IMO turn off AutoUpdate and obtain SP2 directly.

You can then decide if you want AU back on.

Yes, this is most puzzling stuff. MS shoots itself in the foot, again?

Auto download does not install the update untiull you check and accept the
EULA. So if you don't get that you have not installed sp2 so checking winver
won't tell you anything usefula as regards to sp2.

why not download the entire package of 266 mb. It claims to be for it
managers but works just as well for a single computer.

I never saw a EULA! :|

My understanding was that AU would be throttled and it might takes days or
longer to get it all. So the OP should check it again on Monday and not
worry about it in hours.
