Automatic Scanning Inop

Windows Defender will not auto scan at any designated scan dates and times.
Manul scanning works ok. Get a Defender alert message every three days that
a scan has not been performed and is recommended daily. Works ok on a
Windows 2000 Professional computer but does not work on a Windows XP Home
Edition w/SP2 computer. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Defender
on the XP Edition but auto scan still will not run.

Go to Control panel, maintenance and performance, scheduled tasks. Check,
under Advanced, that scheduled tasks are enabled.

Same deal for me. I have it installed on 2 computers.

When you click on the "You haven't scanned your computer in XX days," an
error message pops up.

On one, it says "Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80003003. Invalid
Pointer"

On the other, it says, "Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80070002.
The system cannot find the file specified."

Scanning manualy works fine, though. Just the auto-scan is bad.

Ideas?

Scheduled Tasks are enabled. Even tried to schedule Windows Defender under
Scheduled Tasks but automatic scanning never happens no matter what scanning
frequencyis tried.

Is the windows defender service running?

You can see this either at a command prompt (net start, or sc query
windefend)
or using services.msc (start, run, services.msc)

Well, I have the same problem. Descriptions above by both bilbun and Ray
Elias completely describe my symptoms, except that Scan menu selection works
whereas Scan Now button is as described (error message). So this is one more
"vote" for the problem.

What version of Windows®Defender are you on? Your replying to a posting
that is 3 months old, and the current versions are:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1441.0

Definition Version: 1.14.1501.7

Is your computer powered up when the scan is scheduled to occur? If it's
not, the scan should occur when you next boot up. Also, the scheduled time
is approximate, not intended to represent a specific exact time. Notice as
well the recommended automatic scan should be a Quick scan not a Full scan
(from Defender Help), in which case the scan will only last a short while
(often around 2 minutes) and you may not even notice it.
