Fatal error when starting Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop®
or AutoCAD® Mechanical but not AutoCAD®
Published date: 2001-04-18
ID: TS65248
Applies to:
AutoCAD® Mechanical 6
AutoCAD® Mechanical 2000i
Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop® 6
Mechanical Desktop® Release 5
Issue
You install Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop® or AutoCAD®
Mechanical and when you restart the computer and start
the program you just installed, a "Fatal Error: Unhandled
Exception" error message is displayed. However, when you
start AutoCAD® from the same installation, the AutoCAD
software runs without error.
Solution
This problem occurs because some DLL files are missing,
modified, or corrupt. These DLL files are installed with
the operating system and not as part of the Mechanical
Desktop or AutoCAD Mechanical installations.
The ARX files that are loaded for Mechanical Desktop and
AutoCAD Mechanical require several DLL files to be
present. If these DLL files are not present, the ARX
files will not load correctly, and you will see several
error messages display in the AutoCAD text window. The
AutoCAD software functions because no ARX files are being
loaded.
To resolve the problem, reinstall the operating system so
that the DLL files that Mechanical Desktop or AutoCAD
Mechanical requires to load the ARX applications are
reinstalled. You cannot resolve the problem by
uninstalling and then reinstalling the Autodesk software.

Can I install .dll and/or .arx files only or do I need to
custom reinstall the OS? What .dll and/or .arx files do
I need?
