Auto scan and real-time protection don't work

The older version of MS anti-spyware would run in the background and provide
real-time protection and come on at a scheduled time to do an auto scan. The
new Defender version doesn't seem to run in the background at all. Is there
something I'm not doing right?

Hi,

it runs as a service!
Go to System Control>events and look for Defender.

Tom Emmelot has given correct info here--Windows Defender runs as a
service--it provides more effective real-time protection than Microsoft
Antispyware did, with less visible impact on the user.

However, if you want the reassurance of an icon, you can go to Tools,
Options, scroll down to real-time protection options, and near the bottom of
that section is an option to display the tray icon.

This assumes you are on UI code 1.1.1347.0 or newer, which was posted on
April 12th, I believe. See help, about and the top version number. If you
are on an older build, visit Microsoft's download center and do a new
download of Windows Defender--run it, and it will upgrade.
