Auto complete on e-mail addresses

Donald Kaufmann

Here's what I have discovered on the auto-completion of email addresses,
after much agravation. You have to type the first 3 characters of the email
address you want to use. Then you hit the tab key and it will fill in the
rest of the email address if it is present in your contacts list. Give it a
try and let me know if it works for you. Thanks.

I think it autocompletes on future uses of an address after the first one.

However, what it doesn't seem to do is pick up the initial letter
capitalization automatically ever. So, if you have a contact which is
"Bev...", in Outlook Express with WAB, typing "bev" would automatically pick
up that initial capital letter. Windows Mail doesn't do that properly. If,
for example, I type "b", and the full name appears with a lower case "b", if
I hit Enter or click Check, it corrects. However, if I just leave it alone by
clicking in the body of the message, it's wrong everytime.

Try it once to send to someone such as yourself. Send the message. Then try
sending another one to yourself (assuming you have yourself in the
contacts). Does it autocomplete after that?

We're trying to figure out what the circumstances are when it works and when
it doesn't, so I will be real helpful if you reply back. Especially given
you imported. Also try creating someone new (like someone who doesn't
exist) and try sending an email and then see if after you send it, then it
autocompletes.

Well I have tried everything and like most of you have said there appears to
be no rhyme or reason and even if you send a message to everyone etc Windows
Mail still 'forgets' the details. BUT believe it or not, the 3 characters
and TAB thing has worked ! (for today anyway hahahaha)... It is
disappointing that a company like MS which could be classed as having a
'defacto copyright on the english language' has launched a product in the
21st century that is flawed in basic email. The other disappointment is
there appears to be no corporate responsibility or ethics in reply to
consumers who have paid their hard earned money for this product. The
corporate line would appear to be 'we are very big, we can do what we want,
you will take the product we give you, we at MS don't care about you the
consumer'. I would like to say this, does Mr Gates have to go through this
rigmarole to send HIS email every day, in the 21st century? I would just
like a system that HE has access to, to send my email effectively! Once
again, it is disappointing to have a dishonest MS corporate culture in New
Zealand.

I have tried everything too and remain completely frustrated. Since my new
laptop, Vista and Windows Mail are all very new to me, I have not paid any
attention to what has been happening in the media. Has MS recognized this
problem? Is there a date when they say it will be corrected? In the
meantime what are you going to do, switch to something else?

Mine does the same thing--only auto completes some contacts but not all!
Go figure

I have read all of the thread regarding auto completion and it is clear to me
that nothing has been done to rectify this alarming fault which to me is not
a good advert for MS. I have a brand new computer with Vista Premium and I
wish I stayed with XP. This auto completion fault (and a fault it is) has
what other people has said 'no rhyme or reason' I find it very frustrating.
This recurrent fault I believe must have something to do with the timing of
the moon. One minute it is there and then it is not - just like a cloud
passing by. Come on MS sort it out. A good question earlier said what is Mr
Gates using for email? It surely cannot be Windows Mail, he wouldn't put up
with it - a patch is well overdue.

The WM patches may be overdue, but also they may never come.
Fact is, the auto-completion bug was fixed in the version
of WLM released on May 30th, so it is not like MS doesn't
know how to fix it.

Thank you for that Gary, obviously I bought my system too soon i.e. a month
after the release you refer to so there is clearly a lot of redundancy out
there already on dealers shelves so buyer beware. Unless MS bring out the
patch I would suggest that any people intent on buying Vista and use MM avoid
it like the plague until MS arranges fixes for this and a a few of the
problems listed in this forum. If MS have the patch I can't see what the
problem is in making it available for download. Clearly Mr Gates must have
his updated version and kept it in house. The poor old consumer has to rough
it out. I'm afraid I can't see the logic in holding onto a fix. I thought
Vista was supposed to be the bees knees but instead it looks like buyers
should hold back for 2 years until MS sort all the problems out.

Probably a dumb question but what happens to all the folders, addresses, etc.
in Windows Mail if I download WLM? Will they all be there in WLM? I've had
all the problems with email described here and it's maddening.

G

Gary VanderMolen

When upgrading from WM to WLM, all accounts, settings, rules, folders
and emails will be imported automatically. You may have to tell it to
import your contacts, but that is easily done.

I've installed windows live mail from
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas but had to import contacts &
folders from windows mail via file/import. I got the contacts, in fact I got
two of every one! And all the "storage folders" that were imported are called
"imported folders" and all of them are empty even tho they all have bracketed
numbers beside them! How do I get my folders back with their saved messages?
I'm desperate! Thanks for your help.

I don't know why your Windows Live Mail installation did not
go well. I can assure you that is very uncommon.
You can get back to Windows Mail by simply uninstalling
Windows Live Mail.

I am also having problems with the auto complete in Vista, the TAB button
does not work either. Has anyone come up with a solution yet as it is
driving me to drink!

The autocomplete for email addresses in Windows Mail only knows the last 29
addresses you sent to.

I have the same experience as Sara -- auto complete only works on recently
used addresses -- about a week - before it "forgets" the address and then I
have to look it up using search.
Do you have any solutions yet?

Steve,

I see you wanted more info on "autocomplete" circumstances.
I posted my experience on another thread regarding this which I will repeat
if missed.

My auto complete works only on some contacts and not on others.
Many of the contacts that it is not working on are ones I have sent to and
received from --several times.
Also I have not imported any addresses or address books from any other
system.
I added them all in manually-- I have a brand new Gateway computer
with Vista HP pre-installed.
I am wondering if this Windows Mail problem spans all manufacters or only
Gateway.
In addition I am observing some contacts which were auto-completing
a day or so ago but are not auto-completing for me today..

Autocomplete is simply not functining properly, even though everything is
checked and
set correctly for this feature.
Thanks.

my experience is different -- there are addresses that i have used many
times, but if i have not used them in the last week, windows mail forgets
them. I agree, windows must come out with a patch to fix this.
