Auto complete on e-mail addresses

B

Betty Ball

I am changing from Outlook Express to Windows Mail. I exported/imported
address book with no problem.

In Outlook Express, email addresses would complete soon after starting to
type in the name. That does not happen on Windows Mail. How do I change?

Try it once to send to someone such as yourself. Send the message. Then try
sending another one to yourself (assuming you have yourself in the
contacts). Does it autocomplete after that?

We're trying to figure out what the circumstances are when it works and when
it doesn't, so I will be real helpful if you reply back. Especially given
you imported. Also try creating someone new (like someone who doesn't
exist) and try sending an email and then see if after you send it, then it
autocompletes.

cheers,

steve

I am having the same problem. I also imported the address book from Outlook
Express. If I have already sent mail or received mail from the contact using
Windows Mail, then it will auto fill. If it is the first time I have used the
contact, it will not auto fill.

I changed a contacts address and then clicked 'Create Mail' and started to
type the contacts name. The 'old' address appeared in the 'To' field. It did
auto-complete but used the wrong address.
I left the old address in Contacts but it was not the preferred address. So
it seems the program is not pulling the email address directly from the
contact list.

Steve,

I see you wanted more info on "autocomplete" circumstances.
I posted my experience on another thread regarding this which I will repeat
if missed.

My auto complete works only on some contacts and not on others.
Many of the contacts that it is not working on are ones I have sent to and
received from --several times.
Also I have not imported any addresses or address books from any other
system.
I added them all in manually-- I have a brand new Gateway computer
with Vista HP pre-installed.
I am wondering if this Windows Mail problem spans all manufacters or only
Gateway.
In addition I am observing some contacts which were auto-completing
a day or so ago but are not auto-completing for me today..

Autocomplete is simply not functining properly, even though everything is
checked and
set correctly for this feature.
Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know if anyone at MS is looking at these
messages, but that should help, if they are.

I think everyone is having a somewhat unique experience. <G>

Ditto what Sara said. I hope someone from MS is paying attention cause I've
always been a MS fan but this Windows Mail is a real screw-up. Someone
better fix it soon or there will be LOTS of bad PR.

I finally had success when I deleted all of the WAB transfer of addresses
from Windows Mail and exported/imported addresses from Outlook Express to
Windows Mail using CSV format. I also found that I generally needed to type
about 1/2 of the name before it would auto complete.

I have this same problem. I finally contcted Microsoft support. After much
activity they finally told me that autocomplete will not work with imported
Outlook Express address lists until you send that person the second email.
The first time you send the person the email you will have to go to Windows
Contacts and select the name from your imported list. Auto complete will not
work on this address at this point. Send that first message. When you go to
send this person a second message, auto complete will work.

You could send your entire address list a message saying, "Ignore this
message. I need to send it to get my Microsoft Vista Windows Mail
autocomplete function to work properly". I think Microsoft owes us a patch.

Thanks for that feedback.
Interestingly, the "send once, autocomplete next time" also works
with addresses not in your address book! I sent a few test message
to one of my seldom used addresses, and the second time it
autocompleted eventhough it's not in my contacts list.

If autocomplete also activates upon *receiving* a message from a given
contact, you could send a message to yourself but munge the 'From'
address to whatever the contact's address is.

mine worked first time after importing a CSV instead of WAB .

I take it back. It did not work to send an email to my entire contacts
lists. Even more, some of the folks I sent email messages to yesterday that
would auto complete, won't auto complete today. Microsoft's claim that the
second time you email someone auto complete will work, doesn't always hold
true. These "second time" emails should have worked because the first time
emails were not even imbedded in group emails or reply emails.

Microsoft Technical support also had me re-import my Outlook Express address
book as a CSV. But it isn't working for me.

Those of you that are getting auto complete to work on emails not in your
Windows Contacts probably have Tools/Options/Send "Automatically put people I
reply to in my Contact List" checked.

I don't have that setting checked. The email address that is autocompleting
for me is not in my Contacts list. It's truly a mystery.

My autocomplete doesn't work for messages I receive, just for messages I
send, and then only for a few hours. Then autocomplete forgets that
addressee also. (Sometimes)

I also have the same issue. I imported from Outlook Express also. Sometimes
the auto fill works and sometimes it doesn't. There seems to be no rhyme or
reason to when it does or does not work.

The thing about the second time around did not hold true for me. I have sent
emails to one person several times but have not sent in the last few days and
his will not auto complete. I deleted all my address and re imported in a
csv. and still no luck. I can not believe that MS has not responed to this
issue. What is strange is there is no rhyme or reason for the way it is
working or not working. any help from anyone yet?

Do you have contacts with similar name?
Like David, Davis, Dave
In this case, it probably won't auto complete until the 4th letter, since
the first 3 are the same.

You can just type a few letters of the contact name, compose your message
and hit Send. A box should pop up and ask which contact you meant.

How do I find my e-mail server to set up on my Toshiba Vista laptop?

You will need to ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Also, that information is usually listed on your ISP's support page.

The first time you send the person the email you will have to go to Windows

That to me is completely unacceptable and is the reason I've dumped Windows
Mail and moved to Thunderbird.

You should NOT have to send email to make this work. It never worked that
way under Outlook Express! This sounds more like an excuse to cover up a bug.
