audio compression codec

For some unknown reason i seem to have lost the use of
audio compression codecs.

I have taken the relevant .msc files off the windows xp cd
and tried to reinstall them however it has not worked.

I have read many microsoft knowledge articles relating to
this problem however nothing has worked yet.

Does anyone know how i can reinstall these codecs without
loosing any of the work on my computer?

I have a 120gb hard drive with only 15 gb left and
everything is very important to me so obviously i dont
want to loose it.
