can anyone enlighten me with what is probably a simple
problem! i can not open attachments in outlook express.
sometimes a message is displayed saying unsafe
attachments have been removed, but they are definately
not unsafe. its as though O.E is blocking everything as a
precaution. all replies in simple tems please!! im
useless!

1. Start Outlook Express.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the Security tab, click to clear the "Do not allow attachments to be
saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" check box under
Virus Protection, and then click OK.

go into outlook express, tools, options, security and uncheck do not allow
attachments

Greetings --

Outlook Express' new (post SP1) default security settings are
simply trying to protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an
attachment actually contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks
any of those file types that could potentially contain a virus. In
Outlook Express, Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow
attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"
option, assuming you trust the sender, of course. And by trusting the
sender, I mean: Is he or she sufficiently computer-savvy to have taken
precautions and not to have become infected with a mass-emailing worm
or virus? Most viruses spread because their creators count on our
blindly opening emails from friends and acquaintances.

The wiser course of action, however, might be to modify your list
of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB articles below:
