Atapi.sys not updated by SP2

I've just installed WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe and during
the backup process it gave me an error about not being able to copy
atapi.sys from Windows/System32/Drivers.

I looked in the specified folder and the file is there. Why couldn't
it copy it for back up?? I skipped the file and after the installation
finished I looked again and it's still there, just not updated.

I also noticed that it is NOT digitally signed. Shouldn't it be?? I
had previously installed the Intel Application Accelerator but
uninstalled it due to a problem with my DVD burner.

I have a dual boot system and was able to extract the SP2 atapi.sys
from C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab while in the other OS and
copied it to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers and restarted XP.

But in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers it shows under
driver details for atapi.sys that the version is 5.1.2600.2180 but all
info is Unknown and it is NOT Digitally Signed. I tried uninstalling
the IDE controller and restarting, but the atapi.sys file has not been
updated. All other files were updated and digitally signed. What's
up??

Thanks for any help.

Do you have Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% installed?
If so, that would prevent atapi.sys from copying over properly

I did have Daemon Tools installed. I uninstalled it through Add/Remove
Programs, but after a restart I still have the entry Generic DVD-ROM
SCSI CdRom Device under DVD/CD-ROM drives and D346PRT SCSI Controller
under SCSI and RAID Controllers. I tried to uninstall both of those
but they get reinstalled on restart. How do I uninstall the stupid
program??!!

OK. I went to Daemon's site and I found instructions (as well as why
atapi.sys won't update) on how to do a manual uninstall. Followed the
instructions, rebooted and now atapi.sys is the correct version and is
digitally signed.

Thanks Jason!

I also had the problem when trying to install SP2. What I did was to
use Process Explorer <http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/
procexp.shtml> and close the file handle for atapi.sys. After that,
SP2 installed without complaining.

Mine wasn't signed either. The full version string, "5.1.2600.2180
(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)", suggest that it's the right file though.

Glad you got it working.

Not so fast...upon start up this morning I checked it again and now
it's back to the unsigned version again. It is version 5.1.2600.2180
(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) though. What's up??!!
